Annapolis’ Quirky Tradition: Burning Socks to Welcome Spring

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – How do you welcome spring after one of the coldest winters in decades? In the Chesapeake Bay town of Annapolis, the answer, for nearly half a century, has been to burn your socks. This annual festival, held in the city’s Eastport neighborhood and timed to coincide with the spring equinox, is a unique blend of tradition, community, and a touch of pyromania.

The tradition began in 1977, according to Kelly Swartout, vice president of development at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park. A local sailor, fed up with the frigid temperatures and a bay that had frozen over, dramatically discarded his socks into a fire, declaring he wouldn’t wear them again until the following winter. What started as a single act of defiance has blossomed into a beloved local custom.

From Frigid Feet to Festive Flames: The Evolution of a Tradition

The sock burning isn’t just about getting rid of winter wear; it’s become deeply intertwined with the local sailing community and the arrival of warmer weather. As Scott Neuman of NPR reported, the event marks the unofficial start of boating season on the Chesapeake Bay. The timing is crucial, coinciding with the spring equinox, a symbolic turning point towards longer days and milder temperatures.

The event itself is a lively affair. Attendees bring socks to cast into the flames, enjoy oysters, and listen to music. Mary Keller, a lifelong Annapolis resident, told NPR she simply enjoys “watching the socks burn.” Nicholas Buscemi, pictured in the report, brought a pair of Maryland flag socks, though he clarified he wasn’t planning to burn *those* particular socks, opting instead for an older pair.

A Community Celebration Rooted in Resilience

This year’s event held particular significance after a winter that tested the patience of even the most seasoned sailors. The Annapolis Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series, typically held throughout the winter, was delayed due to extensive ice cover on Spa Creek and the Severn River. As Dick Neville, co-chair of the race committee, explained, racing was impossible until the ice cleared. The delayed start only amplified the anticipation for the sock burning and the official start of sailing season.

The event isn’t just about symbolic gestures. It’s a celebration of community, marked by live music, oyster roasts, and a shared sense of anticipation for the sailing season ahead. As one attendee put it, it’s “just an excuse to drink,” but one steeped in local history and tradition.

Jefferson Holland, Annapolis poet laureate, plays a key role, reciting his “Ode to the Equinox” before the sock burning begins. The poem, as reported by NPR, playfully justifies the sock sacrifice, declaring that come spring and summer, bare feet are the preferred footwear.

The sock burning itself is a chaotic, communal act, with dozens of socks soaring through the air to meet the flames. It’s a fitting end to a tradition born from a sailor’s frustration with the cold and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Annapolis community.
