Belo Horizonte Flooding: Men Rescued, Rainfall Update & Safety Tips

March 7, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Two Men Rescued After Becoming Stranded at Gas Station During Heavy Rainfall in Belo Horizonte

Heavy rainfall in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, on Friday night (March 6, 2026), led to widespread disruption and put individuals at risk. On Avenida Cristiano Machado, in the Dona Clara neighborhood of Pampulha, two men found themselves stranded after rising floodwaters effectively turned the avenue into a river.

According to the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG), who responded to the emergency call, the two individuals were employees of a gas station along the avenue and became trapped as the water level rapidly increased. Firefighters successfully reached and safely rescued both men.

The CBMMG also noted that the region is prone to flooding and experiences frequent occurrences of localized flooding. The Cristiano Machado avenue was temporarily blocked by the BH Civil Defense on Friday evening due to the high risk of overflow from the Suzana stream, also in Pampulha. Flooding was also reported on the campus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in the same area, according to reports.

A Pattern of Rainfall and Regional Impact

The recent heavy rainfall is part of a broader pattern of significant precipitation in Belo Horizonte. As of 5:30 AM on March 7, 2026, rainfall accumulation figures show considerable variation across different regions of the city. The Centro Sul region recorded 97.2mm of rainfall, representing 49.2% of the average March rainfall. The Oeste region also experienced substantial rainfall, with 93.2mm (47.2% of the monthly average). The Pampulha region saw 76.2mm (38.6%), while the Norte region experienced the least rainfall at 19.4mm (9.8%).

These figures highlight the uneven distribution of rainfall across the city, with some areas experiencing significantly higher levels of precipitation than others. The overall accumulated rainfall in March, up to 5:30 AM on March 7, demonstrates that several regions are already approaching or exceeding a substantial portion of their average monthly rainfall totals.

Protecting Yourself During Heavy Rainfall

Authorities recommend the following safety measures during periods of heavy rainfall:

  • Do not walk or allow children to play in flooded streets or near streams.
  • Do not seek shelter under trees during storms.
  • Be especially cautious in areas prone to landslides, and hillsides.
  • Never approach downed power lines. Contact CEMIG (116) or Civil Defense (199) immediately.
  • If you notice cracks in walls or the emergence of sinkholes, notify the Civil Defense immediately.
  • During lightning storms, avoid open areas and do not use electrical equipment.

Understanding the Flood Risk in Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte, like many urban centers, faces recurring challenges related to heavy rainfall and flooding. The city’s topography, combined with its extensive network of streams and rivers, makes it particularly vulnerable to these events. The Suzana stream, mentioned in connection with the closure of Avenida Cristiano Machado, is a key factor in the region’s flood risk. When the stream’s capacity is exceeded by heavy rainfall, it can quickly overflow, inundating surrounding areas.

The Pampulha region, where the recent incidents occurred, is known to be particularly susceptible to flooding. What we have is due to a combination of factors, including its low-lying terrain and the presence of several streams and drainage channels. The UFMG campus, also affected by flooding, is situated in a vulnerable area.

What the Fire Department Said

The CBMMG’s response to the stranded gas station employees underscores the importance of preparedness and rapid response during flood events. Firefighters were able to successfully reach the individuals and bring them to safety, preventing potential injury or loss of life. The CBMMG’s statement also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region due to its susceptibility to flooding. The department continues to monitor conditions and respond to emergency calls as needed.
