Brown-Forman to Launch El Jimador, Herradura & More Spirits in India | Market Expansion
Jack Daniel’s Maker Brown-Forman Bets Big on India’s Premium Spirits Boom
US-based spirits giant Brown-Forman, the company behind Jack Daniel’s, is significantly expanding its presence in India, planning to introduce premium tequila and whisky brands – including El Jimador, Herradura, and Benriach – over the next two to three years. The move reflects a broader trend of global spirits manufacturers targeting India’s rapidly growing market of affluent consumers, projected to become the world’s largest spirits market by volume by 2032, according to industry forecasts. This expansion comes as Brown-Forman navigates softer consumer spending in the US, seeking growth in emerging markets.
India’s Affluent Consumers Drive Demand
India’s rising incomes and increasing willingness to spend on luxury goods, including premium alcoholic beverages, are fueling this surge in demand. Gaurav Sabharwal, Managing Director at Brown-Forman India, told Reuters that “Earlier, the aspiration used to be there, but the access or the affordability was limited (in India). Today … The access and affordability are now matching with aspirations.” This shift is attracting major international brands eager to tap into a market expected to add 15-20 million novel consumers each year. The company’s Indian sales climbed 21% to 2.1 billion rupees ($22.9 million) in the year ending March 2025, according to data from Tofler.
Expanding Beyond Jack Daniel’s
Currently, Brown-Forman imports its liquor into India and maintains a portfolio of approximately 10 brands, including Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, and Gin Mare. The company intends to broaden this offering by introducing three to four additional brands within the next two to three years. Brown-Forman, which boasts a portfolio of over 40 brands globally, is positioning itself to become a major player in India’s premium spirits segment. The company also recently rolled out its first scotch single malt, The Glendronach, in Delhi and Bombay in January, signaling a commitment to diversifying its offerings beyond its core bourbon brand. The Hindu BusinessLine reports that Woodford Reserve, Brown-Forman’s bourbon offering, is experiencing strong traction and engagement in the Indian market.
Confirmed vs. Unclear: Investment Details and Market Ranking
While Brown-Forman is clearly committed to expanding its Indian operations, certain details remain unclear. Sabharwal did not quantify the planned investment in brand building and organizational growth within India. The exact financial figures for this expansion have not been disclosed. While India represents a significant growth opportunity, it is not currently ranked among Brown-Forman’s top 10 global markets. However, the company anticipates entering that league in the coming years with sustained focus and investment. Global net sales for Brown-Forman slipped 5% to $4 billion for the year ending April 2025, highlighting the importance of growth in markets like India to offset softer performance elsewhere.
How India’s Spirits Market Works: Regulations and Challenges
Despite the optimistic outlook, India’s spirits industry operates within a complex regulatory environment. High taxes, restrictions on advertising, and varying state-level policies present significant challenges for companies like Brown-Forman. Sabharwal emphasized the demand for companies to build diverse portfolios and expand their reach to navigate this regulatory uncertainty. The Economic Times notes that these regulations require a strategic approach to market penetration.
The Broader Context: India’s Rise as a Spirits Powerhouse
India’s projected rise to become the world’s largest spirits market by volume by 2032 is a significant shift in the global landscape. Currently, China holds that position, but changing demographics and economic growth are driving rapid expansion in India. This trend is attracting investment from numerous international spirits companies, all vying for a share of the burgeoning Indian market. The increasing affluence of the Indian middle class, coupled with a growing appetite for premium brands, is creating a favorable environment for growth. Business Standard reports that India’s affluent buyers are increasingly splurging on luxury goods, including premium liquor.
What Happens Next for Brown-Forman in India?
Over the next two to three years, Brown-Forman will focus on launching El Jimador and Herradura tequila, along with Benriach whisky, in the Indian market. The company will also continue to invest in its existing brands, such as Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve, while exploring opportunities to introduce additional premium spirits to its portfolio. Success will depend on navigating the complex regulatory landscape and effectively reaching India’s growing base of affluent consumers. The company’s ability to adapt to local preferences and build strong relationships with distributors will also be crucial. The expansion into new categories like tequila and scotch malts demonstrates a strategic effort to position Brown-Forman as a comprehensive premium spirits provider in India.
