Carole Delga Rules Out Alliance with France Unbowed Ahead of French Elections

Carole Delga Rules Out Alliance with France Unbowed Ahead of French Elections

March 1, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Occitanie regional president Carole Delga has publicly rejected any electoral alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise (LFI) ahead of the March 15th and 22nd municipal elections, characterizing such a union as a “dishonor” and a “denial” of the Socialist Party’s historical principles. The firm stance, articulated in a Sunday interview with La Tribune, underscores a deepening rift within the French left as it navigates a complex political landscape and the looming threat of gains by the far-right Rassemblement National (RN).

Delga Calls for a ‘Clear and Definitive’ Break

Delga’s statement is a direct challenge to elements within the Socialist Party (PS) who advocate for tactical alliances with LFI in specific municipalities to prevent RN victories. She explicitly called on the PS leadership to establish a “clear and definitive rupture” with Mélenchon’s party, invoking the legacy of prominent figures like Jaurès, Blum, and Mitterrand to emphasize the ideological incompatibility. “If, on the evening of the first round,” she stated, “there is a union with La France Insoumise, in any town whatsoever, I will remind the socialists of the denial that this signifies.”

Ideological Divide and the Deranque Affair

The timing of Delga’s declaration is particularly pointed, coinciding with increased scrutiny of LFI following the death of Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist, and the subsequent investigation involving members of the Jeune Garde, an antifascist group linked to LFI. Mélenchon himself has faced renewed criticism for remarks perceived as antisemitic. These events have amplified existing tensions within the left, making collaboration with LFI increasingly problematic for some factions.

Toulouse as a Key Battleground

The dispute is particularly acute in Toulouse, where the Socialist candidate, François Briançon, is vying to unseat the incumbent mayor. A potential alliance with LFI’s François Piquemal could be crucial for securing victory in the second round. However, Delga has firmly ruled out such a scenario, stating she would “never win at the price of dishonor.” This position suggests a willingness to risk losing Toulouse rather than compromise on her principles.

A Conditional Retreat, But No Fusion

While Delga firmly opposes a broad alliance with LFI, she did leave open the possibility of strategic withdrawals in specific races where a RN victory is imminent. However, she stressed that any such retreat would not involve a formal fusion or agreement with LFI. “If there is a risk of victory for the RN, then we must withdraw, but without fusion,” she explained. “I will never stop fighting against the far right, but I will not accept that my party could unite with La France Insoumise.”

Carole Delga’s Political Trajectory

Carole Delga has held a prominent position in French politics for over a decade. Currently serving as President of the Occitanie region – a role she’s held since January 2016, and was re-elected for in 2021 – she also previously served as a Member of Parliament representing the 8th constituency of Haute-Garonne from 2012 to 2017. Before that, she was Secretary of State for Commerce, Crafts, Consumption and the Social and Solidarity Economy under Prime Minister Manuel Valls from 2014 to 2015. Her career began with a role as Vice-President of the Midi-Pyrénées regional council in 2010. Delga also served as the mayor of Martres-Tolosane from 2008 to 2014. She is currently also President of Regions of France, a position she has held since July 2021. Implications for the French Left

Delga’s uncompromising stance reflects a broader struggle within the French left to define its identity and strategy in the face of declining electoral fortunes and the rise of both the far-right and centrist forces. The regional elections of June 2021, which saw the Socialist Party and Republicans maintain their dominance, highlighted the challenges facing newer political movements like LFI and Europe Écologie Les Verts. The Occitanie region, formed from the merger of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées in 2015, represents a significant political and demographic bloc, with six million inhabitants spread across 13 departments. Delga’s decision to prioritize ideological purity over tactical gains could further fragment the left, potentially benefiting the RN in key municipal contests.
