Genetic Similarities Uncovered in Feline and Human Cancers

Researchers examined tumors from nearly 500 pet cats across five countries, a scale of analysis previously unseen in feline oncology. The perform, a collaboration between the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Ontario Veterinary College in Canada, the University of Bern, and other institutions, identified key genetic alterations driving cancer in cats that closely resemble those found in human cancers. The study pinpointed seven driver genes associated with feline mammary carcinoma, with the gene FBXW7 being altered in over 50% of the tumors studied. Importantly, mutations in FBXW7 in human breast cancer are linked to poorer outcomes, mirroring the pattern observed in cats. Researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute suggest this overlap could be a crucial area for further investigation.

The ‘One Medicine’ Approach: Benefits for Both Species

The implications of this research extend beyond a better understanding of feline cancer. The concept of ‘One Medicine’ – a collaborative approach between human and veterinary medicine – is gaining traction, and this study provides a compelling example of its potential. Treatments that prove effective in cats could be tested in humans, and vice versa. The study as well found that certain chemotherapy drugs were more effective in tumor samples with FBXW7 mutations, a finding that, although preliminary (based on laboratory-grown tissue), suggests a potential treatment strategy for both feline mammary cancer and human breast cancer. Another key gene, PIK3CA, found in 47% of feline mammary tumors, is also a well-known mutation in human breast cancer and is already targeted with specific drugs called PI3K inhibitors.

Beyond mammary cancer, the researchers identified similarities in mutations affecting the blood, bone, lungs, skin, gastrointestinal system, and central nervous system. These shared genetic features highlight opportunities to study cancer across species and potentially develop therapies that benefit both. This is particularly significant given that cancer is one of the leading causes of illness and death in cats, yet its genetic basis has historically been poorly understood. Understanding the Study: Scope and Limitations

Early detection is crucial for successful cancer treatment in both cats and humans.

The findings also underscore the value of continued research into the genetic basis of cancer in all species. By studying cancer in animals, we can gain insights into the fundamental mechanisms of the disease and potentially develop new therapies that benefit everyone. As ScienceDaily reports, the research could lead to new treatments that benefit both animals and humans.

Future Directions and Ongoing Research

The research team is now focused on further exploring the genetic pathways involved in feline cancer and identifying potential therapeutic targets. They are also working to develop new diagnostic tools that can detect cancer earlier and more accurately in cats. Professor Sven Rottenberg, co-senior author at the University of Bern, emphasized the power of having access to a large set of donated tissues, allowing researchers to assess drug responses across tumor types at a scale previously impossible.

The next steps involve clinical trials to test the effectiveness of new treatments in cats and humans. Researchers are also investigating the role of the immune system in feline cancer and exploring the potential of immunotherapy – a type of cancer treatment that harnesses the power of the body’s own immune system – to fight the disease. The ultimate goal is to develop precision oncology approaches for both cats and humans, tailoring treatment to the specific genetic characteristics of each individual’s cancer.

Bailey Francis, co-first author at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, succinctly summarized the broader impact: “By comparing cancer genomics across different species, we gain a greater understanding of what causes cancer. One of our major findings was that the genetic changes in cat cancer are similar to some that are seen in humans and dogs. This could help experts in the veterinary field as well as those studying cancer in humans, showing that when knowledge and data flows between different disciplines, we can all benefit.”
