Chile: Delivery Driver Killed in Conchalí Robbery & Shooting

March 22, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Homicide Investigation Underway in Conchalí Following Apparent Robbery

A homicide occurred Sunday morning in the Conchalí commune of the Metropolitan Region, reportedly after the victim was robbed of his cell phone. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about street crime and public safety in the area. Details are still emerging as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and a related injury.

The shooting took place around 7:30 AM near the intersection of Avenida Cardenal José María Caro and Pasaje Cacique Pillolco. The victim, identified as a delivery driver for a mobile application, had his phone stolen. According to initial reports, the victim then sought assistance from neighbors in an attempt to locate the individuals responsible for the theft. It was during this search that he sustained gunshot wounds, resulting in his death at the scene. You can find driving directions to the location via Waze.

Second Victim Hospitalized

Authorities have confirmed a second victim was also injured in the incident, sustaining both gunshot wounds and injuries from a sharp object. Officials stated the second victim is currently hospitalized but is not in life-threatening condition. The identity of the second victim has not been released.

Police Response and Initial Findings

The Fiscal Fernando García, from the Flagrancia unit of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office of the North-Central region, indicated that specialized police units – including the GOPE (Special Operations Group) and OS-9 (organized crime unit) – were deployed to execute search warrants at two residences. These searches are aimed at identifying potential suspects and recovering evidence related to the crime.

“The information we have so far confirms the death of a male individual who died as a result of gunshot wounds,” García stated. “We also confirmed the existence of a second victim, who is hospitalized with gunshot wounds and injuries attributable to an assault with sharp objects.”

Allanamientos (Search Warrants) Executed

Police conducted searches of two homes in the vicinity, seeking to identify those involved and potentially recover evidence. “Preliminary investigations have allowed OS-9 personnel to execute search warrants at two residences in order to establish the possible participants in the events and eventually obtain the seizure of elements that prove not only participation but also the facts,” officials said.

The initial assessment suggests the incident stemmed from the theft of a cell phone, prompting the victim and others to confront the alleged perpetrators at the intersection where the assault occurred. The investigation is ongoing to determine the precise sequence of events.

Carabineros’ Perspective

Prefect Cristian Morgenstern of the Santiago Norte Prefecture praised the collaborative efforts of Carabineros (Chilean national police) with the forensic department (Labocar) and OS-9, as well as the support from the GOPE and COP (Community Police). “We are carrying out various procedures to achieve the arrest of the people involved. At the moment we are carrying out procedures at homes near the place where the regrettable situation occurred. We do not have any detainees,” Morgenstern reported.

Public Transportation Options in the Area

The area where the incident occurred is accessible by public transportation. According to Moovit, several micro (bus) routes – including 230, 722, B06, B10, and B11 – serve the vicinity of Avenida Cardenal José María Caro. Metro lines L3 and L2 also provide access to the area, though a connecting micro or walk may be required.

Confirmed vs. Unclear Details

Confirmed: A male individual died from gunshot wounds following a reported cell phone robbery in Conchalí. A second individual was injured with both gunshot wounds and injuries from a sharp object and is currently hospitalized. Police are conducting searches at two residences.

Unclear: The identities of the victim and the injured individual have not been officially released. The number of suspects involved remains unknown. The specific motive beyond the initial cell phone theft is still under investigation. The exact sequence of events leading to the shooting is still being pieced together. Whether the second victim was with the first at the time of the robbery remains unconfirmed.

Background: Rising Concerns About Street Crime

This incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing public concern regarding street crime in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Whereas official crime statistics are subject to ongoing debate and methodological variations, anecdotal reports and media coverage suggest a rise in robberies, particularly those targeting mobile phones. This has prompted calls for increased police presence and preventative measures from residents and political leaders alike. The Conchalí commune, like many urban areas in Chile, faces challenges related to socioeconomic disparities and limited opportunities, factors that can contribute to criminal activity.

What Happens Next?

The investigation is being led by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office of the North-Central region, with support from Carabineros. Investigators will continue to analyze forensic evidence collected from the scene and the residences searched. Witness interviews will be crucial in establishing a clear timeline of events and identifying potential suspects. If suspects are apprehended, they will be formally charged and brought before a judge. The prosecutor’s office will then build a case for prosecution, which could lead to a trial. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
