China’s New Solid-State Battery Could Power EVs 620+ Miles on a Single Charge

The pursuit of longer ranges for electric vehicles took a significant step forward this week, with researchers at Nankai University in Tianjin, China, announcing the successful testing of a next-generation, semi-solid-state battery. Early results suggest the battery could power an EV for over 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single charge – a distance that could alleviate range anxiety for many potential EV buyers and begin to rival the convenience of gasoline-powered vehicles. The development, detailed in a statement from the university, represents a notable advancement in battery technology, though independent verification is still needed.

Beyond Lithium-Ion: The Promise of Solid-State Batteries

Current electric vehicles rely heavily on lithium-ion batteries, but these have inherent limitations. One key concern is safety: the liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries are flammable, posing a risk of thermal runaway – a chain reaction leading to fire. Solid-state batteries, as the name suggests, replace this liquid electrolyte with a solid material, significantly reducing the risk of fire. Beyond safety, solid-state batteries offer the potential for higher energy density, meaning more energy can be stored in the same space, and faster charging times. However, achieving practical solid-state batteries has been a long-standing challenge, primarily due to difficulties in maintaining sufficient ionic conductivity – the ability of ions to move freely within the solid material.

The Nankai University team appears to have overcome some of these hurdles with a novel approach. Their battery utilizes a lithium-rich manganese cathode and a hybrid solid-liquid electrolyte system. This “hybrid” design combines the benefits of a solid-state architecture with a “super-wetting” composite electrolyte, aiming to maximize ionic conductivity and enhance safety. Super-wetting, refers to the electrolyte’s ability to thoroughly permeate the battery materials, ensuring efficient ion transport.

Energy Density and Real-World Testing

The researchers report an energy density exceeding 500 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) – a 30% increase compared to current leading lithium-ion batteries, which typically achieve around 300 Wh/kg. Higher energy density translates directly to greater range for a given battery weight and size. The battery has reportedly been installed in a prototype vehicle developed by China FAW Group’s battery manufacturing subsidiary, China Automotive Recent Energy Battery (CANEB), and subjected to long-distance driving tests, according to reporting from CNEVPost. While specific details about the vehicle remain limited, this real-world testing is a crucial step in validating the technology.

It’s important to note the distinction between energy density at the cell level (500 Wh/kg) and at the pack level. The Nankai University battery pack currently achieves 288 Wh/kg at the system level. This reduction is expected, as the overall pack includes components like cooling systems, wiring, structural supports, and safety features, all of which add weight and reduce the overall energy density. This is consistent with industry standards for reporting EV battery performance.

What Does This Mean for EV Range?

The current prototype boasts a total battery capacity of 142 kilowatt-hours (kWh). Developers are optimistic that future iterations could reach 200 kWh and exceed 340 Wh/kg at the pack level, potentially pushing driving ranges beyond 1,000 miles (1,600 km). To put this into perspective, the median range of EVs manufactured in 2024 was 283 miles (455 km), with the longest-range models topping out at 512 miles (825 km), according to a report from EV.com. The Lucid Air currently holds the record for the longest range available in 2026.

Beyond Range: Safety and Longevity

The benefits of solid-state batteries extend beyond increased range. The non-flammable nature of solid electrolytes significantly enhances safety, reducing the risk of catastrophic failures. Solid electrolytes may also contribute to a longer battery lifespan by mitigating dendrite growth – the formation of metal spikes that can cause short circuits and degradation over time. Faster charging times are another potential advantage, stemming from the higher ion conductivity of solid electrolytes, though this aspect requires further investigation.

The Path Forward: Verification and Scalability

While the results from Nankai University are promising, it’s crucial to remember that this research is still in the development phase. The findings have not yet been independently verified through peer-reviewed research, a standard process for validating scientific claims. The university-industry collaboration highlights the growing momentum behind solid-state battery technology, but significant challenges remain before these batteries become widely available. Scalability – the ability to mass-produce these batteries at a reasonable cost – is a major hurdle. The cost of materials and the complexity of manufacturing processes will need to be addressed to make solid-state batteries commercially viable.

Looking ahead, demonstrations of the improved battery technology are expected to begin later this year. The scientific community will be closely watching for independent verification of the reported performance metrics and further details on the battery’s long-term durability and cost-effectiveness. The development of solid-state batteries represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of electric vehicle technology, with the potential to reshape the future of transportation.
