Civana Resort: The Arizona Wellness Escape Black Women Are Loving
I didn’t realize how depleted I was until I got still enough to feel it.
Finding Respite in Carefree, Arizona
That happened in the Sonoran Desert, in a town literally called Carefree, Arizona, which I didn’t even clock until I was already there and starting to understand it. I mean, being carefree in Carefree is pretty symbolic if you ask me.
CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa, located just outside of Scottsdale, has been gaining attention as a potential escape for those feeling burned out. I’d been seeing it on social media, particularly from Black women, and decided to see if the hype was real. And it was.
The resort immediately struck me as a space where Black women were intentionally seeking self-care. I observed women of various ages on solo trips and girls’ weekends, all appearing to prioritize their well-being. The atmosphere was instantly calming, and I felt a sense of exhale just taking it in.
A Philosophy of Happiness and Healthiness
CIVANA operates on a philosophy of “happiness first, healthiness always,” according to Chief Brand Officer Julia Lavine. This approach means the resort doesn’t aim to “correct” guests, but rather to work *with* the natural environment and individual needs. The programming is flexible and designed to be supportive, not prescriptive.
The resort offers over ten complimentary daily wellness classes, drawing on varied disciplines and techniques. These include Desert Bathing, a practice adapted from the Japanese tradition of shinrin-yoku, which involves mindful immersion in nature. Guided Nature Walks also encourage a slower pace and deeper connection with the Sonoran Desert landscape. Other options include Sound Bowl Healing, Gratitude Meditation, aerial yoga, and mat pilates fusion.
Movement, Spa, and Nourishment
I focused on more active pursuits during my stay, including aerial yoga (which proved more challenging than anticipated), aerial stretch, pilates, pickleball, and utilizing the well-equipped gym. Pickleball, surprisingly, became a highlight, fostering connection with other guests. I also enjoyed running outside the resort and taking advantage of the spa facilities, including a deep tissue massage, sauna, and pool.
The dining options at CIVANA are also noteworthy. Seed offers casual, plant-based options for breakfast and lunch, while Terras provides a more formal dining experience with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.
A Space for Reconnection
CIVANA’s 22,000-square-foot spa, with 24 treatment rooms, is a destination in itself. The resort’s overall design and programming are geared towards providing a space for reconnection and restoration. It’s a place where you can prioritize your well-being without judgment or pressure.
Many of us are operating with a level of depletion that has become normalized. CIVANA offers a potential antidote to that, providing a flexible and supportive environment for individuals to rediscover rest and rejuvenation. I left feeling genuinely rested and ready to re-engage with my life, and I’m already considering a return visit.
