The Corriere della Sera is marking its 150th anniversary with a series of events, publications and initiatives designed to celebrate its history and look toward the future. Founded on March 5-6, 1876, the newspaper has become a cornerstone of Italian journalism. The celebrations include a concert at Teatro alla Scala in Milan on March 6th, with President Sergio Mattarella in attendance, and the publication of several commemorative volumes, including a collection of front pages and a book detailing the newspaper’s history. A web series, “Corriere 150 anni. La libertà delle idee” will also be released, featuring interviews and reflections on the future from a diverse range of personalities.
A Historical Record: Replicas of Past Editions
From March 12th to December 31st, the Corriere della Sera will offer replicas of its most important historical editions alongside the daily newspaper, for an additional euro. These replicas are organized into thematic series, covering pivotal moments in world history – from the birth of the Italian Republic and the 9/11 attacks to the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic – as well as significant events in Italian history, such as the Matteotti case and the Moro assassination. These reproductions aim to provide a tangible connection to the past and a deeper understanding of the events that have shaped the world.
Concert at La Scala: A Celebration of Freedom of Ideas
A grand concert will be held at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on March 6th, featuring the Orchestra conducted by Alexander Soddy and musical pieces by Bellini and Wagner. The event, titled Corriere 150 anni. La libertà delle idee (Corriere 150 years. The freedom of ideas), will be attended by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. The concert is by invitation only, but will be live-streamed on Corriere.it.
A Collection of Investigative Journalism
A series of books focusing on significant investigative journalism and reporting will be released alongside the Corriere della Sera, starting March 14th. This collection aims to provide a valuable resource for understanding history and current events, featuring works from renowned journalists and authors.
An Artistic Installation Across Milan
To commemorate its 150th anniversary, the Corriere della Sera is creating a diffused art installation throughout Milan, highlighting the newspaper’s connection to the city. The installations, designed by Studio Mario Cucinella Architects in collaboration with the City of Milan, will be located in symbolic places throughout the city. A digital map will guide visitors to all the locations involved.
Corriere TV: A Web Series on the Past and Future
A web series on Corriere TV, curated by Venanzio Postiglione, will explore the history of the newspaper, from its founding to its current challenges. The series will be filmed in the Sala Albertini and will include ten episodes, available on the Corriere della Sera website starting tomorrow, March 4th.
A Documentary Film: 150 Years of Italian History
The documentary film, 150 anni Corriere della Sera. Il racconto dell’Italia (150 years of Corriere della Sera. The story of Italy), chronicles the history of the newspaper through the voices of its journalists, past and present. Directed by Simona Risi and featuring Neri Marcorè, the film will have its premiere on March 6th at the Anteo cinema in Milan, and will then be distributed to 45 cities across Italy.
A Volume Dedicated to the Newspaper’s History
Corriere della Sera 150. La nostra storia (Corriere della Sera 150. Our story) retraces the events that have shaped the newspaper’s history. Published by Fondazione Corriere, the book explores the relationship between the newspaper and the country, and is available in bookstores since December.
Front Pages Through Time
1876–2026, La storia nelle prime pagine del Corriere della Sera (1876–2026, The history in the front pages of Corriere della Sera), published by Solferino, collects the front pages of the most significant events in the newspaper’s history. The collection includes the first edition of the newspaper, as well as front pages covering events such as the death of Giuseppe Verdi, the proclamation of racial laws, and more recent events like the election of Donald Trump.
The First Edition as a Supplement
A replica of the first edition of the Corriere della Sera will be included as a supplement with the newspaper on March 5th. The first edition, dated March 5-6, 1876, consisted of four pages and marked the beginning of the newspaper’s journey.
Local Editions: “Il Corriere racconta l’Italia”
The local editions of the Corriere della Sera are also organizing a series of events, under the name Il Corriere Racconta L’Italia (Corriere tells Italy). These events will take place from April to autumn, in cities across Italy, and will focus on the history of the country through the lens of local communities.
“7” Supplement: Great Voices from the Past
A special issue of “7” will be published alongside the newspaper on March 6th, featuring 50 historical articles from the newspaper’s archives, written by renowned authors and journalists.
Podcast: Ideas, Visions, and Networks
A special podcast, Corriere startup, will explore the technological evolution of the Corriere della Sera, from telegraph correspondence to WhatsApp messages.
“Il Mio Corriere della Sera”: Memories from Notable Figures
The book Il mio Corriere della Sera (My Corriere della Sera) features memories and anecdotes from 150 Italian and international figures, reflecting on their relationship with the newspaper. The supplement will be available free with the newspaper on March 6th.
Special Stamp and Silver Coin
A special stamp will be issued on March 5th, and a silver coin on April 15th, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Corriere della Sera.
Theater Performance: Milan in 1975
Milano 1975. Quando abbiamo smesso di capire il mondo (Milan 1975. When we stopped understanding the world) will be performed at the Franco Parenti theater on March 31st, directed by Claudio Autelli and written by Elena Patacchini and Andrea Galli.
