Cottage Cheese Recall: 24 States, Symptoms & Walmart Refund

Cottage Cheese Recall: 24 States, Symptoms & Walmart Refund

March 1, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Consumers in 24 states who recently purchased Great Value cottage cheese from Walmart are being advised to discard the product or return it for a full refund. The voluntary recall, initiated by Saputo Cheese USA Inc., stems from concerns that some dairy ingredients used in the cheese may not have undergone complete pasteurization, potentially posing a health risk. The affected products were sold between February 17 and February 20, 2026, and include various sizes of fat-free, lowfat, and small curd cottage cheese.

Which States Are Affected?

The recall impacts Walmart stores in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The issue was identified during routine “pasteurizer troubleshooting exercises” conducted in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notice.

Understanding Pasteurization and the Risks

Pasteurization is a critical process in dairy production. It involves heating milk to a specific temperature for a set duration to eliminate harmful bacteria and pathogens. As the National Library of Medicine explains, this process is designed to make milk and dairy products safe for consumption. When pasteurization is incomplete, there’s a risk of exposure to organisms that can cause foodborne illness.

Unpasteurized dairy products can harbor bacteria like E. Coli, Salmonella, and Listeria. These can lead to food poisoning, with symptoms that typically appear within hours or days of consuming the contaminated product. Although most individuals recover without lasting effects, certain populations are more vulnerable to severe complications.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you’ve consumed the recalled Great Value cottage cheese, it’s significant to be aware of potential symptoms of food poisoning. These can include:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever

Most cases of food poisoning resolve on their own within a week with rest and adequate hydration. Still, individuals experiencing a high fever, severe diarrhea, or signs of dehydration – such as decreased urination, dizziness, or extreme thirst – should seek medical attention promptly. The Mayo Clinic offers detailed information on food poisoning symptoms and when to seek medical care.

Specific Products Included in the Recall

The recall encompasses the following Great Value cottage cheese products:

  • Great Value Fat Free Small Curd Cottage Cheese — 0% Milkfat in a 24 oz. Container with a “Best If Used By” date of April 1 or April 3
  • Great Value Lowfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese — 2% Milkfat in a 24 oz. Container with a “Best If Used By” of April 1, April 2 or April 3
  • Great Value Small Curd Cottage Cheese — 4% milkfat minimum in 16 oz., 24 oz. And 3 lb. Container with a “Best If Used By” date of April 1 (for 3 lb.), April 2 (for 16 oz., 24 oz. And 3 lb.) and April 3 (for 24 oz.)

Saputo Cheese USA Inc. Has stated that no illnesses or hospitalizations have been reported to date in connection with the recalled products. However, the company is taking a precautionary measure to protect public health. The FDA announcement includes pictures of the affected products to aid in identification.

What Happens During a Recall and How Does Surveillance Work?

This recall highlights the multi-layered system of food safety surveillance in place. The initial detection occurred during internal troubleshooting exercises by Saputo Cheese USA Inc. This proactive approach, coupled with collaboration with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and subsequent notification of the FDA, demonstrates a commitment to identifying and addressing potential risks. The FDA then disseminates recall information to the public and monitors the effectiveness of the recall process.

Recalls are not uncommon in the food industry. They serve as a critical mechanism for removing potentially unsafe products from the market and preventing widespread illness. The FDA maintains a database of food recalls, allowing consumers to stay informed about potential hazards. The agency also conducts routine inspections of food processing facilities to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Looking Ahead: Ongoing Monitoring and Guidance Updates

Saputo Cheese USA Inc. Has indicated that the impacted pasteurizer has been returned to normal function and verified by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. However, ongoing monitoring of the pasteurization process will likely be conducted to ensure continued adherence to regulatory standards. Consumers are encouraged to check for updates from the FDA and Walmart regarding the recall. If you have any concerns about potential exposure, consult with a healthcare professional.
