Delta Pauses Airport Perks for Congress Amid DHS Shutdown

Delta Pauses Airport Perks for Congress Amid DHS Shutdown

March 24, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Members of Congress are experiencing a direct impact from the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown: the temporary suspension of special flight services provided by Delta Airlines. This change, first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, underscores how the political impasse in Washington is now affecting even routine travel arrangements for lawmakers.

Delta Airlines has paused services like airport escorts and “red coat” assistance – expedited aid with navigating airports – for members of Congress. Lawmakers will now receive service consistent with their SkyMiles status, meaning no preferential treatment beyond what any other passenger with a similar loyalty tier would receive. The airline cited strains on resources due to the shutdown as the reason for the change.

“Due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown, Delta will temporarily suspend specialty services to members of Congress flying Delta,” a statement from the airline explained. “Next to safety, Delta’s no. 1 priority is taking care of our people and customers, which has become increasingly difficult in the current environment.”

Shutdown’s Broader Impact on Travel Security

This decision by Delta follows growing frustration within the airline industry regarding the shutdown’s effect on Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel. Delta CEO Ed Bastian recently expressed his “outrage” over the situation, particularly the fact that TSA officers are being required to work without pay. He told CNBC, “It’s inexcusable that our security agents, our frontline agents, that are essential to what we do, are not being paid, and it’s ridiculous to see them being used as political chips.”

The DHS shutdown, which began in mid-February, has created significant challenges for travelers. TSA officers are currently working without pay, leading to staffing shortages and longer wait times at airport security checkpoints. The impact extends beyond inconvenience; concerns have been raised about potential security vulnerabilities due to reduced staffing levels.

Whereas Delta has taken this step, other major airlines have not yet announced similar changes. A Southwest Airlines spokesperson told NPR that the airline is “continuing to engage with our federal partners and joins the airline industry in urging Congress to fund the TSA and CBP without further delay.”

Political Standoff and Congressional Response

The root of the DHS shutdown lies in a disagreement between Congressional Democrats and Republicans over funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Democrats have refused to approve funding for DHS until changes are made to ICE policies, particularly in the wake of the killing of two U.S. Citizens by immigration enforcement officers in Minneapolis. They are seeking carve-outs in funding to address concerns about ICE’s practices while negotiations continue.

Senate Democrats and the White House have been engaged in ongoing negotiations, but progress has been limited. Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stated on Saturday that discussions regarding ICE reforms are “productive” but emphasized the require to continue funding TSA workers in the meantime. “Let’s keep negotiating the outstanding issues with ICE while sending paychecks to TSA workers now,” Schumer said. “Let us conclude those long lines at the airport now. Here’s the logical, expedient, correct thing to do.”

Republicans, although, are maintaining their position that the entire department must be funded without conditions. This impasse has led to a stalemate, leaving thousands of DHS employees working without pay and disrupting essential services.

Legislative Efforts to Address Airport Screening

Last week, the Senate passed a bill sponsored by Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, that would prohibit preferential screening at airports for members of Congress. The bill aims to ensure that all travelers are subject to the same security procedures, regardless of their political affiliation. However, it has not yet been considered by the House of Representatives.

What’s Next for DHS Funding and Travel Security

The immediate future of the DHS shutdown, and consequently the impact on travel security and congressional perks, remains uncertain. Negotiations between Democrats and Republicans are ongoing, but a resolution is not yet in sight. The longer the shutdown continues, the greater the strain on TSA personnel and the more likely disruptions to air travel will become.

The TSA’s ability to maintain adequate staffing levels and security protocols will be closely monitored in the coming weeks. Further airline responses, potentially including additional service suspensions or calls for increased federal funding, are also possible. The situation highlights the interconnectedness of political decisions and everyday travel experiences, and the potential consequences of government shutdowns on essential services.

Travelers are advised to check official public health updates and allow extra time for airport security procedures. Anyone experiencing travel disruptions due to the shutdown should contact their airline for assistance.
