Detroit’s Robowar: Where Humans Battle Giant Robots in a Church

Detroit’s Robowar: Where Humans Battle Giant Robots in a Church

March 13, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Detroit, Michigan – In an unexpected corner of the city, tucked away behind the unassuming facade of a church, a unique spectacle is unfolding: full-scale robot battles. The Interactive Combat League, founded by Art Cartwright, is drawing crowds to witness nine-foot-tall, steel-clad “gladiators” engage in simulated combat, firing projectiles at 20 rounds per second. The event, which began last summer, is selling out its 572-seat auditorium and gaining national attention, offering a glimpse into a long-held cultural fascination with robotic combat.

From Science Fiction to Detroit’s 7 Mile

The idea of robots battling isn’t new. As early as 1956, Richard Matheson’s short story “Steel” explored the concept, and it was further popularized by a 1963 Twilight Zone episode and the 2011 film Real Steel. Cartwright, however, is bringing this fantasy to life with a distinctly Detroit twist. He notes that the region is a hub for robotics, leading the nation in the number of robots deployed, particularly in the automotive industry. However, these aren’t the industrial robots assembling cars; they are human-piloted machines designed for entertainment.

The Mechanics of Mech Suits and a Growing Fanbase

The “robots” themselves are essentially mech suits, operated by performers. The indicate features not only these large combatants but also smaller, commercially available robots – some costing under $20,000 from companies like Unitree – that dance and interact with the audience. The appeal seems to be broad, attracting families and individuals eager for a unique form of entertainment. One young attendee, 10-year-old Kaden Denard, expressed a playful antagonism towards the robots, playfully calling them “clankers” – a term that has recently emerged as a pejorative for robots and AI on social media.

A History of Robotic Imagery

The fascination with artificial beings extends back further than many realize. A recently restored film from 1897 by French filmmaker Georges Méliès, Gugusse et l’Automate, is believed to contain the first known depiction of a robot on film. This discovery, made by the Library of Congress, highlights a long-standing human interest in creating and imagining artificial life.

Beyond Entertainment: Robotics and Detroit’s Economy

Cartwright’s venture isn’t solely about entertainment. He also runs Global Empowerment Ministries, and sees Robowar as a way to connect community members with potential employment opportunities in the burgeoning robotics field. He envisions expanding the concept to include online interactive battles, where viewers can control robots remotely using virtual tokens and participate in a league featuring AI-driven personas representing different cities. This expansion would tap into the growing market for interactive entertainment and potentially create new avenues for engagement with robotics technology.

The Evolving Relationship with Machines

The enthusiastic, and sometimes playfully antagonistic, response from audiences like young Kaden Denard raises interesting questions about our evolving relationship with machines. The use of the term “clanker” highlights a potential for negative sentiment, even as robots become increasingly integrated into our lives. This dynamic is worth observing as robotics technology continues to advance and become more prevalent in various aspects of society. The success of Robowar, and the reactions it elicits, offer a microcosm of this larger cultural shift.
