Dionisio Romero University: New Digital University Aims to Form Entrepreneurs
Dionisio Romero University: A New Business School Led by Practitioners
Dionisio Romero Paoletti, a veteran business leader with a long family history in Peruvian enterprise, is launching a new digital university focused on entrepreneurship and business education. The institution, named Dionisio Romero University (DRU), aims to address a significant gap in access to practical business skills, particularly for young people in Peru, and beyond. Romero envisions DRU as a unique educational experience, blending academic rigor with real-world insights from experienced business professionals.
The impetus for DRU stems from the operate of the Fundación Romero, which for years has focused on providing opportunities to Peruvians, mirroring the entrepreneurial spirit of Romero’s great-grandfather, Calixto Romero Hernández, who started a business trading Panama hats in Catacaos. Romero observed that while access to capital was important, a critical missing element was the knowledge and tools needed to successfully launch and manage a business. This realization led to a series of courses, and the concept for a fully-fledged university.
“My concern comes from the Romero Foundation,” Romero explained. “The mission has always been to give people in Peru the same opportunities that we felt our grandfather had. But we realized that what was missing wasn’t just opportunities and seed capital, but knowledge and the tools to start a business and develop it successful.”
A Family Legacy Embodied in the University’s Name
The decision to name the university after the Romero family – Dionisio himself, his father, and his grandfather all share the same first name – is deliberate. It signifies a full commitment to the academic quality of the institution and communicates that DRU is a business school “led and managed by people who have done it in practice over the years.” The name serves as a direct link to the family’s entrepreneurial history and a promise to uphold its values.
Beyond Theory: Practical Entrepreneurship at the Core
DRU’s curriculum is designed to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset in its students. The university aims to equip them with not only theoretical knowledge of economics and business but too the skills to solve complex problems, work in teams, and initiate or contribute to businesses of all sizes. The goal isn’t solely to train executives for large corporations, but to empower individuals to improve existing family businesses or launch their own ventures.
A key differentiator for DRU is its approach to instruction. The university will utilize a blend of academic professors and experienced business leaders as instructors. The latter will share real-world anecdotes and case studies, providing students with practical insights. The curriculum will also incorporate simulations and interactive learning tools to enhance engagement.
A Global Reach with a Focus on Latin America
While DRU is initially launching in Peru, It’s registered and based in the United States, specifically Florida, due to its favorable regulatory environment for innovative educational institutions. This strategic location also allows DRU to tap into a broader pool of talent and resources. The university intends to serve students across Latin America and even in the southern United States, with a particular focus on attracting students from Peru.
The decision to launch as a fully digital university is driven by a desire to offer a competitive cost structure and rapidly expand its reach. While a physical campus isn’t currently planned, Romero indicated that the possibility of in-person gatherings for workshops and networking events may be explored in the future.
Investment and Expansion Plans
The initial investment in DRU has been “substantial,” according to Romero, primarily focused on content creation and the development of a robust technology platform. Further investments are planned to continuously update the platform and expand the range of courses offered. The university aims to reach 35,000 students in its first year.
DRU’s annual tuition is approximately $10,000 USD, a price point that is competitive in the US market but potentially higher for students in Peru and other Latin American countries. To address this, the university will offer a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure accessibility for a diverse range of students. A unique aspect of the scholarship program is the opportunity for students to extend access to courses for up to three family members at no additional cost, fostering a broader impact on families and communities.
A New Model for Business Education
Dionisio Romero University represents a significant new entrant into the landscape of business education. Its emphasis on practical skills, experienced instructors, and a commitment to accessibility sets it apart from traditional institutions. The university’s success will depend on its ability to deliver on its promise of providing a transformative learning experience that empowers the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
