This phenomenon stems from a psychological process called “mind perception,” the innate human tendency to attribute mental states to other beings. We readily apply this to people and animals, but research now shows we extend it to robots, computers, and even abstract entities. A recent study, detailed in a paper published in Springer, examined whether interacting with modern AI systems alters how much “mind” people attribute to them. Researchers conducted four experiments using large language models (LLMs) – including ChatGPT, LLaMA, and Claude – and found that even limited exposure increased perceptions of agency and, to a lesser extent, experience.

Psychologists generally define mind perception along two key dimensions: agency, the ability to think, plan, and act independently, and experience, the capacity to sense emotions and sensations. We tend to grant machines agency more easily than experience. A computer can perform complex calculations, but attributing joy or sadness to it feels less natural. However, LLMs are blurring this distinction. Their ability to communicate in fluent, conversational language – to explain ideas, generate stories, and even simulate empathy – triggers a tendency toward anthropomorphism, the attribution of human characteristics to non-human entities.

The study participants rated the level of agency and experience they believed AI chatbots possessed. Some were shown examples of chatbot responses, while others interacted with the systems directly. Consistently, exposure to the chatbot increased perceptions of its “mind-like” qualities. Even a short demonstration of a model’s capabilities was enough to increase perceptions of agency and, in some cases, experience. Seeing the system generate thoughtful or creative responses appeared to be a key factor.

Interestingly, the type of exposure mattered significantly. Reading examples of chatbot responses sometimes led to a greater increase in mind perception than interacting with the chatbot in real-time. This is likely because people often approach chatbots with a utilitarian mindset, asking straightforward factual questions – similar to using a search engine. These interactions highlight the system’s information retrieval abilities but may not showcase its more nuanced capabilities. Curated examples, can demonstrate a wider range of skills, including humor, creativity, and complex reasoning.

Beyond First Impressions: Prior Experience and Individual Differences

The research also revealed that prior experience plays a role. Individuals who had more previous exposure to chatbots were more likely to attribute mental capacities to them overall. This suggests that familiarity breeds a different kind of perception. People with a stronger general tendency toward anthropomorphism – those who readily see human-like qualities in non-human things – were also more inclined to attribute minds to AI systems. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, these perceptions are likely to evolve, potentially leading to a shift in how we view these systems – from tools to something more akin to social actors.

The Implications for AI Design and Regulation

The evolving perceptions of AI have significant implications for how these technologies are designed and regulated. Understanding the psychology of mind perception is crucial for ensuring responsible development and deployment. If people increasingly perceive AI as possessing agency and experience, it could influence trust, reliance, and even ethical considerations. For example, if a chatbot convincingly simulates empathy, users might be more likely to disclose sensitive information or accept its recommendations without critical evaluation.

A separate study highlighted in Stanford University research, points to another layer of complexity: perceived political bias in popular AI models. This underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in AI development, as biases can influence perceptions and erode trust.

The Evolving Relationship: What to Expect

It’s important to note that the research does not suggest that AI systems are actually conscious or possess genuine minds. Rather, it demonstrates how our brains are wired to interpret and respond to complex stimuli, and how those responses can be shaped by interaction. As AI continues to advance, and as we interact with these systems more frequently and in more diverse contexts, our perceptions are likely to continue to shift. This ongoing evolution necessitates a careful and nuanced approach to AI development, one that prioritizes understanding the psychological impact of these technologies and ensuring their responsible integration into society.
