You read them and think, “Yes, that’s me.” But what you do with that information is far more important than the result itself. Understanding how we interpret and act on these insights can unlock potential, rather than limit it.

The Trap of Causal Explanations

The most common mistake people make is treating personality test results as fixed explanations for their behavior. We tend to view our assigned “type” or identified traits as an inherent essence that dictates how we think, feel, and act. This can lead to self-limiting beliefs. “I’m just not assertive, so that’s why I struggle with boundaries.” “I’m an introvert, so leadership isn’t for me.” “I’m prone to anxiety, so I’ll never perform well under pressure.”

But, the data that feeds these tests reflects past patterns – how you’ve thought, felt, and behaved previously. The results simply categorize those patterns using labels like conscientious, agreeable, or emotionally sensitive. It’s a description, not a destiny. Many people mistakenly see these results as a ceiling, believing they couldn’t possibly pursue certain paths because their personality profile doesn’t “allow” it. For example, dismissing a business venture because of a perceived lack of conscientiousness.

Personality Isn’t Written in Stone

This tendency to box ourselves in is particularly problematic because our traits are far more flexible than we often assume. Psychologists define personality as our typical way of thinking, feeling, and behaving, but these patterns are constantly adjusted. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, whereas widely used, is increasingly recognized as having significant deficiencies in terms of validity and reliability, highlighting the complexity of personality assessment.

A More Empowering Approach

When you grab a personality test, approach the results with the understanding that they represent “who I was,” not “who I am and always will be.” Ask yourself: “Are these patterns supporting me as I move toward the life I want?” And, crucially, “Which pattern, if adjusted even slightly, would unlock a new opportunity or possibility?”

Instead of accepting your results as an immutable truth, consider whether a particular tendency is helpful or needs to be modified. For instance, discovering you are highly conscientious might reflect a tendency toward detail-orientation and reliability. While valuable in many work settings, it could also manifest as difficulty delegating tasks or feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities. Adjusting that conscientiousness – moving away from “rigid perfectionism” – allows you to maintain high performance without the accompanying stress that impacts other areas of your life.

From Insight to Action: Experimentation is Key

Real change begins with experimentation. If your results suggest a tendency to avoid conflict, practice speaking up in low-stakes situations. If you tend to overprepare, try submitting work when it’s “fine enough” rather than striving for unattainable perfection. These tiny experiments accumulate data. You learn that stepping outside your comfort zone can bring you closer to your goals, encouraging further exploration and growth. As your patterns shift, your personality profile will naturally evolve to reflect those changes.
