Dubai Flights: Airline Updates & Travel Advice Amid Iran Conflict

Dubai Flights: Airline Updates & Travel Advice Amid Iran Conflict

March 9, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

The evolving conflict between the US, Israel and Iran continues to disrupt air travel across the Middle East, with significant impacts on flights to and from Dubai. Airlines including Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways have issued updated travel advisories as airspace restrictions and security concerns persist. The situation has left thousands of travelers stranded and prompted the UK government to advise against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates.

The crisis began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, triggering retaliatory attacks from Tehran that directly impacted the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This escalation has led to widespread flight cancellations and reroutings, creating a challenging environment for both airlines and passengers. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has warned that regional escalation poses “significant security risks” and has invalidated travel insurance for those traveling against their advice.

Airline Updates: Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways

Emirates, based in Dubai, has begun operating a reduced flight schedule following the partial reopening of regional airspace. The airline is prioritizing customers with confirmed bookings and stated that transit passengers will only be accepted if their connecting flights are still operating. Passengers are urged not to travel to the airport unless they have a confirmed reservation.

Etihad Airways, operating from Abu Dhabi, is running limited services to London Heathrow and Manchester. Yet, all other scheduled commercial services remain suspended. Qatar Airways is currently operating one daily flight between Doha and London Heathrow, but its broader schedule remains temporarily suspended due to airspace closures.

European Carrier Responses: Cancellations and Reroutings

Several European airlines have too been significantly affected. Virgin Atlantic briefly resumed flights to the UK, but a flight that was forced to return to London Heathrow led to the cancellation of services through March 28. British Airways is currently unable to operate services to Dubai and has been utilizing flights via Oman to reach London. Passengers booked on British Airways flights to Dubai before March 15 were offered the option to change their travel dates or receive a full refund.

Air France has cancelled flights between Paris and Dubai until March 10, pending a modern safety assessment. KLM has suspended flights to Dubai, Dammam, and Riyadh until the same date, citing security concerns and avoiding certain airspace corridors. Lufthansa has paused flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with other routes in the Middle East, also until March 10.

Travel Operator Policies and Refunds

Tour operators are responding to the situation by offering flexible cancellation policies and full refunds. Loveholidays has cancelled all trips departing to or via Dubai up to March 15, providing full refunds to affected customers. Emirates is offering refunds for flights until March 31, and Virgin Atlantic has cancelled holidays through the same date. The company has paused sales of Dubai holidays until May, although June departures remain available.

TUI is contacting customers with upcoming travel plans to the UAE to discuss their options, and On the Beach has temporarily cancelled UAE holidays, offering full refunds. These measures reflect the widespread disruption and uncertainty surrounding travel to the region.

Confirmed vs. Unclear: The Current State of Play

Confirmed: Regional airspace remains volatile, leading to flight cancellations and reroutings. The UAE has intercepted multiple drones and missiles, demonstrating the ongoing security threat. The UK government advises against all but essential travel to the UAE. Several airlines have adjusted their schedules and are offering flexible cancellation policies.

Unclear: The duration of the airspace restrictions and flight disruptions remains uncertain. The long-term impact on tourism and the travel industry in Dubai is yet to be fully assessed. The specific details of the intercepted drones and missiles, and their origin, have not been fully disclosed. It remains unclear when normal flight operations will fully resume.

Background: The Escalating Conflict

The current crisis stems from a series of escalating actions. Initial strikes by the US and Israel on Iranian targets were followed by retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Iran, targeting several countries in the region, including the UAE. This cycle of action and response has heightened tensions and created a volatile security environment. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence has stated its armed forces are fully prepared to counter threats and safeguard national security. Gulf News provides ongoing coverage of the developments.

Dubai’s Image as a Safe Haven

The recent attacks have shaken Dubai’s long-held image as a safe and stable destination. The city has traditionally been a popular choice for tourists and businesses seeking a secure environment. However, the direct impact of the conflict, including missile and drone strikes, has raised concerns about the region’s overall security. The Associated Press reports that Dubai’s reputation as a “safe, tax-free haven” has been rocked by the blasts.
