ECDC Launches RSV Panel as Europe Begins Vaccinations

March 17, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor

Europe is preparing to expand protection against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to its most vulnerable adult populations, prompting the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to establish a scientific panel dedicated to developing adult RSV vaccination guidance. The move signals a shift in public health strategy as awareness grows of the significant burden RSV places on older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

Understanding the Rising Concern Around RSV

RSV is a common respiratory virus, typically causing mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover within a week without medical intervention. However, as the ECDC explains, the virus can be severe – even fatal – for specific groups: infants under six months, adults over 65, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The establishment of this new panel reflects a growing understanding of RSV’s impact beyond the very young.

Symptoms of RSV vary with age. While cough, sneezing, fever, and a runny nose are common across all age groups, infants may exhibit irritability, decreased appetite, and changes in breathing patterns, including apnoea – temporary cessation of breathing. Adults may experience disorientation and shortness of breath. The virus can lead to complications like bronchiolitis (inflammation of the little airways in the lung) and pneumonia.

The Scale of the Problem in Europe

The impact of RSV is substantial. According to the ECDC, approximately 250,000 children under five and 156,000 adults are hospitalized annually in the EU, Norway, and the United Kingdom due to RSV. Around one in twenty elderly Europeans contracts RSV each year. These figures underscore the need for proactive measures, including vaccination strategies, to mitigate the virus’s impact on healthcare systems and vulnerable individuals.

What the New ECDC Panel Will Do

The ECDC’s new panel, comprised of scientists, will focus on formulating evidence-based recommendations for adult RSV vaccination programs across Europe. Medscape News Europe reports that the panel’s function comes as several European countries begin to roll out RSV vaccines for at-risk adults. The panel’s guidance will likely address key questions surrounding vaccine prioritization, optimal timing of vaccination, and monitoring of vaccine effectiveness and safety.

Beyond Vaccination: The Role of Surveillance

Vaccination is only one piece of the puzzle. Effective public health responses to RSV also rely on robust surveillance systems. The ERVISS (European Respiratory Virus Surveillance Summary) project provides weekly updates on influenza, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 across the EU/EEA and WHO European Region. This ongoing monitoring helps track the spread of RSV, identify emerging trends, and inform public health interventions. Surveillance data is crucial for understanding the evolving epidemiology of RSV and assessing the impact of vaccination programs.

Understanding Vaccine Development and Approval

The development of RSV vaccines has been a long-standing challenge. Historically, attempts to create a vaccine were hampered by concerns about vaccine-enhanced respiratory disease – a rare but serious complication where vaccination led to more severe illness. However, recent advancements in vaccine technology, including the use of mRNA technology, have led to the development of promising new RSV vaccines that appear to overcome these challenges. These vaccines have undergone rigorous clinical trials to assess their safety and efficacy before receiving regulatory approval.

Who Stands to Benefit Most?

While RSV can affect people of any age, certain populations are at significantly higher risk of severe illness. These include older adults (65 years and older), individuals with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease, and those with weakened immune systems. Premature infants are also particularly vulnerable. Vaccination efforts are likely to prioritize these high-risk groups to maximize the public health impact.

What Comes Next: A Phased Approach to Guidance

The ECDC panel’s work will unfold in several stages. Initially, the panel will review the available scientific evidence on RSV vaccines, including data from clinical trials and real-world studies. They will then develop draft vaccination guidance, which will be subject to public consultation and expert review. Following this process, the ECDC will issue final recommendations to member states, providing a framework for national vaccination programs. This is not a one-time event; the guidance will be regularly updated as new evidence emerges and the epidemiology of RSV evolves.

The establishment of this panel and the rollout of adult RSV vaccines represent a significant step forward in protecting vulnerable populations from this common, yet potentially serious, respiratory virus. Continued surveillance, research, and collaboration will be essential to ensure the long-term success of these efforts.
