Epstein Ties to Common Sense Media Board Members Raise Concerns

Epstein Ties to Common Sense Media Board Members Raise Concerns

March 21, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Common Sense Media Board Members’ Ties to Jeffrey Epstein Raise Questions

Jim Steyer’s nonprofit, Common Sense Media (CSM), a prominent organization dedicated to children’s online safety, is facing scrutiny following reports that five of its board members have past connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The revelations come as CSM prepares to host a high-profile conference featuring prominent Democratic figures like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, raising questions about vetting processes and judgment. Whereas none of the reported ties implicate the board members in any wrongdoing related to Epstein’s crimes, the associations are prompting a closer look at the organization’s leadership.

Confirmed Connections: A Closer Look

Recent disclosures have revealed a network of past associations between several CSM board members and Epstein. Tim Zagat, co-founder of the renowned Zagat Survey, frequently dined with Epstein and appears in the flight log of Epstein’s private jet, infamously known as the “Lolita Express.” Records show Zagat invited Epstein to meals on numerous occasions and even shared a flight with other CSM board members. Geraldine Laybourne, former president of Nickelodeon and a current CSM board member, was a passenger on a 2002 flight aboard Epstein’s jet, maintaining she was unaware of Epstein’s identity or the plane’s ownership.

The connections extend to the academic world as well. Howard Gardner, a Harvard scholar, engaged in extensive correspondence with Epstein even after initial reports of his crimes surfaced. Hundreds of emails detail planned outings and intellectual discussions. Cyrus Vance Jr., former Manhattan District Attorney, joined the CSM board in 2024. His past decisions regarding Epstein’s case – specifically advocating for a lenient sentencing – have drawn significant criticism. Court transcripts reveal the judge overseeing Epstein’s case was “overwhelmed” by Vance’s office’s request for a reduced sex offender classification.

CSM’s Response and the Steyer Connection

Common Sense Media has acknowledged the reports but expressed no concerns. A CSM spokesperson stated, “We have no concerns about these individuals. Common Sense Media remains the leading non-partisan children’s advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the best interest of America’s children and families.” Jim Steyer, the founder of CSM, is the brother of Tom Steyer, a California gubernatorial candidate. The organization’s stated goal is to position children’s “well-being first in the digital era,” and provide parental guidance while also providing a forum for industry experts to discuss how to safeguard minors online.

What the Records Show: Epstein’s Flight Log and Correspondence

The details of these connections are emerging from recently released documents related to Epstein’s case. A flight entry from February 2002 lists “JE. SK. GERALDINE LAYBORNE. KIT LAYBORNE. STEVEN PINKER. NINA TIM ZAGAT,” suggesting Epstein was on board with several individuals. Emails between Gardner and Epstein detail planned outings and intellectual discussions, continuing even after reports of Epstein’s crimes surfaced. Vance’s office argued for a more lenient sentencing for Epstein in 2011, requesting a Level 1 sex offender designation instead of the more severe Level 3.

Beyond the Board: Bill Gates and Chelsea Clinton

The scrutiny extends beyond the directly involved board members. Bill Gates, chair of the board, has also faced questions regarding his past interactions with Epstein, which he has described as “a huge mistake.” Gates admitted to meeting with Epstein several times, initially believing it could benefit his global health philanthropy. Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of the Clinton Foundation and a CSM board member for over a decade, has also been linked to Epstein through Ghislaine Maxwell, who attended her wedding at the invitation of a donor to the Clinton Foundation.

What Happens Next?

The House Oversight Committee is investigating the connections between prominent figures and Epstein. Bill Gates is expected to participate in a transcribed interview with the committee in May. The committee is also seeking testimony from other individuals with ties to Epstein. The ongoing scrutiny raises questions about the vetting processes of organizations like Common Sense Media and the potential for past associations to impact their credibility. The organization maintains its commitment to protecting children, but the revelations have undoubtedly cast a shadow over its work.
