Epstein’s Lawyer Testifies He Knew Nothing of Abuse, Faces Scrutiny

Epstein’s Lawyer Testifies He Knew Nothing of Abuse, Faces Scrutiny

March 20, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Darren Indyke, Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime personal attorney, testified before the House Oversight Committee on Thursday that he had “no knowledge whatsoever” of Epstein’s crimes against women and girls. The testimony, delivered in a closed-door deposition, adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny of those connected to the convicted sex offender and raises questions about the extent to which Epstein’s inner circle was aware of his abuse.

Indyke’s statement comes after a series of depositions before the committee, including testimony from Epstein’s former accountant, Richard Kahn, who also claimed he was unaware of the extent of Epstein’s abuse until after his death. The committee has also heard from former President Bill Clinton and Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend and accomplice.

A Longtime Associate’s Denial

Indyke worked for Epstein for over two decades, becoming deeply involved in the financier’s complex web of businesses and legal affairs. He is considered a key figure in Epstein’s inner circle. Despite this close association, Indyke maintained that his role was limited to providing legal services and that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activity. “My complete lack of involvement in that misconduct is a matter of record,” he stated, according to a copy of his prepared opening statement obtained by NPR. He added that had he known about the abuse, he would have severed ties with Epstein.

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Indyke as part of its investigation into Epstein’s crimes and the network that enabled them. The committee is also focused on the existence of hard drives held by Epstein’s private investigators, which may contain further evidence of his activities. According to a statement by California Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the committee, Indyke testified about these hard drives, but the committee has not yet been granted access to them.

Past Allegations and Financial Connections

Indyke’s claims of ignorance have been met with skepticism, particularly given his long-standing relationship with Epstein and previous allegations of his involvement in facilitating the abuse. A 2020 lawsuit brought by the U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General alleged that Indyke and Kahn were participants in Epstein’s criminal enterprise. The lawsuit was settled in 2022 for over $105 million.

Department of Justice documents also reveal that Indyke was implicated in emails discussing the deletion of hard drives and that Epstein referred victims to Indyke if they were contacted by law enforcement. In 2017, Indyke was flagged for conducting “structured cash transactions” from Epstein’s account, potentially to avoid federal reporting requirements.

The Role of Executors and Victim Compensation

Just days before Epstein’s death in 2019, he named Indyke and Kahn as co-executors of his estate, and both were also named as beneficiaries. Since then, they have overseen the distribution of funds to Epstein’s victims through the Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program, which has awarded over $121 million to 136 survivors, according to Indyke’s testimony.

However, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have expressed strong doubts about Indyke’s claims of ignorance. Several members took to social media after the deposition, arguing that Indyke was a central figure in Epstein’s operation and played a significant role in enabling the abuse. Virginia Democratic Rep. James Walkinshaw told reporters he found it “very hard to believe” that Indyke was unaware of Epstein’s crimes after working with him for so long.

What’s Next: Accessing the Hard Drives and Further Investigation

The House Oversight Committee’s investigation is ongoing. A key focus will be gaining access to the hard drives held by Epstein’s private investigators, which could potentially contain crucial evidence. The committee is also likely to continue scrutinizing the financial dealings of Epstein and his associates, including Indyke and Kahn.

The Department of Justice continues to investigate potential co-conspirators in Epstein’s crimes. Whereas the statute of limitations may prevent prosecution in some cases, the ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full extent of the network that enabled Epstein’s abuse and hold those responsible accountable. The process of uncovering the truth about Epstein’s crimes is likely to be lengthy and complex, but the recent depositions and ongoing investigations represent a significant step forward.

The committee chair, Kentucky Republican Rep. James Comer, stated that Indyke told the committee Epstein convinced him the 2008 conviction was a mistake.

Further scrutiny of financial records and potential witness testimony will be crucial in determining the extent of Indyke’s knowledge and involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities. The committee’s pursuit of the hard drives represents a critical step in uncovering additional evidence and bringing clarity to this complex case.
