Finland Remains Happiest Nation for 9th Year – Norway 6th

Finland Remains Happiest Nation for 9th Year – Norway 6th

March 19, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

For the ninth consecutive year, Finland has been named the world’s happiest country, according to the World Happiness Report released Wednesday. Norway places sixth in the annual ranking, trailing behind Denmark and Iceland.

The report, which scores countries on a scale of 0 to 10, gives Finland an average score of 7.7. Denmark and Iceland follow closely with scores placing them in second and third place respectively, according to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Norway ranks behind its Nordic neighbors and Costa Rica. Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list, with a score of just 1.4. The report indicates an overall increase in life quality across most nations since 2006-2010, with 79 out of 136 countries showing significant improvement, while 41 have experienced a decline.

However, a concerning trend is emerging in Western industrialised nations, which have generally reported decreasing levels of happiness over the past 15 to 20 years. Fifteen countries have seen a substantial decrease in happiness, with only four experiencing a clear increase.

The decline in happiness is particularly pronounced among young people under the age of 25 in Western countries. The United States, Canada, Australia, and Latest Zealand are among the lowest-ranking nations in terms of happiness trends for this age group.

This year’s report places specific emphasis on the potential impact of social media on the well-being of young people. Extensive employ of social media appears to correlate with lower life satisfaction, particularly among adolescent girls, according to new research analyzed in the World Happiness Report.

The study, based on data from American Gallup surveys and other research, was conducted by a global team of researchers led by the University of Oxford. Researchers found that 15-year-old girls who spend more than five hours a day on social media report lower levels of life satisfaction compared to their peers who use these platforms less frequently.

“The key message is that we need to try to get the social back into social media,” said Professor Jan-Emmanuel de Neve of the University of Oxford, as reported by Reuters. He explained that passively consuming algorithmically curated content, particularly material from influencers, has a more negative impact than platforms that facilitate genuine social connections.

Researchers emphasize that the relationship between social media and well-being is complex and influenced by broader social factors. The report does not suggest a simple causal link, but highlights a correlation that warrants further investigation.

The World Happiness Report is a yearly publication that ranks countries by happiness levels, based on factors such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. The report aims to provide a comprehensive picture of global well-being and to inform policy decisions aimed at improving quality of life.

The findings arrive at a time of increasing concern about mental health, particularly among young people, and the role that technology plays in shaping social interactions and self-perception. The report’s emphasis on the importance of social connection and the potential downsides of excessive social media use may prompt further discussion about responsible technology use and the promotion of well-being in the digital age.

The report’s focus on the diverging trends in happiness between older and younger generations also raises questions about the challenges facing young people today, including economic insecurity, climate change, and political polarization. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to thrive.
