From Kitchen to $3M: Boostcous Founders’ Side Hustle Story
From Kitchen Experiment to $5K Daily: The Boostcous Story
Carbondale, Colorado resident Bar Bruhis, 35, is turning a lifelong staple into a rapidly growing food startup. Boostcous, a protein-enriched, gluten-free couscous brand, launched in December 2025 and is already generating over $5,000 in daily sales, with projections reaching $3 million in revenue this year. The story of Boostcous highlights the power of identifying a gap in the market and leveraging personal experience to create a successful side hustle.
A Personal Connection Drives Innovation
Bruhis’s journey began with a childhood spent enjoying couscous, a quick and versatile grain he grew up with in Israel. After moving to the United States, he continued to appreciate its convenience, but noticed a nutritional deficiency. “Regular couscous just doesn’t have much nutrition,” Bruhis explained. This realization sparked the idea for Boostcous – a healthier alternative packed with 18 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber per serving, 100% gluten-free and kosher, and free of glyphosate. The product cooks in just five minutes, addressing the need for a quick, nutritious meal, particularly for those with active lifestyles.
From Side Hustle to Full-Time Pursuit
Boostcous wasn’t an overnight success. Bruhis initially developed and tested the formula with his co-founder, Brian Gallagher, in their kitchen over a period of two years before officially launching the brand. Both founders invested $15,000 each to get the business off the ground. Bruhis balanced the demands of Boostcous with his full-time role as the general manager of KnoCommerce, a post-purchase survey tool for ecommerce brands working with 6,500 Shopify clients. However, the rapid growth of Boostcous prompted a significant decision: Bruhis will transition to working on the business full-time starting in April 2026.
Leveraging Networks and Resources
Bruhis credits his network within the ecommerce space, cultivated through his role at KnoCommerce, for providing valuable mentorship and guidance. He too emphasizes the importance of utilizing free online resources, particularly YouTube, for learning essential business skills. Beyond that, he found a supportive community within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry, where founders are often willing to share their experiences and insights. He specifically mentioned Snaxshot, CPGD, Startup CPG and Express Checkout as helpful communities.
Early Traction and Viral Moment
Boostcous experienced a significant boost in visibility shortly after launch, going viral on the platform X (formerly Twitter). This initial surge resulted in $10,000 in sales within the first two weeks. Whereas this initial momentum was exciting, Bruhis quickly learned the importance of establishing consistent revenue streams through paid marketing. It took approximately two months to refine their marketing strategy and achieve sustainable growth, ultimately leading to the current daily sales exceeding $5,000.
Lessons Learned and Future Outlook
Bruhis offers practical advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: “Just start.” He emphasizes that overcoming the initial inertia is the most challenging part of launching a business, and that learning and adaptation will follow. He also advocates for identifying core competencies and outsourcing tasks that fall outside those areas. He noted that utilizing AI tools, such as OpenClaw, has been instrumental in streamlining operations and allowing him to focus on strategic initiatives. He also highlighted the importance of transparency and responsiveness to customer feedback, recounting an instance where a misprinted nutritional label was quickly corrected based on customer input.
Looking ahead, Boostcous plans to expand its flavor offerings beyond the initial “OG Flavor,” with Thai Coconut Curry and Chili Crunch already in development. The company is also actively seeking customer input to guide future flavor innovation. The success of Boostcous demonstrates the potential for identifying a niche market, addressing a consumer need, and building a thriving business through dedication, resourcefulness, and a commitment to quality.
