Global Markets at Risk: Qatar LNG Halt & Strait of Hormuz Concerns

Global Markets at Risk: Qatar LNG Halt & Strait of Hormuz Concerns

March 3, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Escalating Tensions: Israel Strikes Iran and Beirut Amidst US Warnings of Further Action

Fresh strikes by Israel targeted locations in Tehran and Beirut on Tuesday, escalating a volatile situation in the Middle East. These actions follow a recent period of heightened conflict and come as the United States signals that “hardest hits” on Iran are still to come, according to reports. The immediate impact is being felt in global energy markets, with concerns mounting over potential disruptions to vital shipping lanes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, and the stability of energy supplies to Asia, and Europe. The situation is particularly concerning given recent reports of attacks on Qatari LNG facilities.

Confirmed Actions and Unclear Details

Israeli forces conducted strikes in Iran, reportedly targeting a facility near Isfahan, and in Beirut, Lebanon. Details surrounding the specific targets and extent of damage remain limited. Officials have not yet publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks, maintaining a policy of ambiguity regarding operations in the region. The United States has acknowledged the strikes, stating they were carried out by Israel, but has not offered further specifics. It remains unclear what prompted the latest round of strikes, though they are widely believed to be a response to Iran’s recent drone and missile attack on Israel, which itself followed a strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus.

The Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Chokepoint

The escalating tensions are raising serious concerns about the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway through which approximately 31% of all seaborne crude oil flows, representing roughly 13 million barrels per day (according to energy consulting firm Kpler). A prolonged closure of the Strait would likely lead to a surge in oil prices, with some analysts predicting oil could surpass $100 per barrel. Global benchmark Brent crude was already up 2.6% at around $80 per barrel on March 3, 2026 – almost 10% higher since the conflict began. The Strait of Hormuz functions as a critical artery for global oil trade.

LNG Supply Disrupted: Qatar Halts Production

Beyond crude oil, the flow of liquified natural gas (LNG) is too at risk. Approximately 20% of global LNG exports originating from the Gulf region, primarily from Qatar, transit the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG providers, halted production on Monday following reported drone attacks on its facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Qatar exported about 9.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of LNG through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) exporting about 0.7 Bcf/d, accounting for nearly all LNG flows from the Persian Gulf through Hormuz. The EIA highlights the critical role of these exports in global energy markets.

Which Countries Are Most Vulnerable?

Analysts predict that Asia will be the region most acutely affected by disruptions to energy supplies. Specifically, Thailand, India, Korea, and the Philippines are identified as particularly vulnerable due to their high dependence on imported oil. Malaysia, as an energy exporter, is expected to be a relative beneficiary. The impact on Europe will also be significant, particularly if LNG supplies are severely curtailed. As oil analyst Saul Kavonic of MST Financial stated, “Nothing can replace Qatari LNG,” and a prolonged shutdown could trigger a gas market shock comparable to the one experienced in 2022 when Russia halted pipeline gas deliveries to Europe.

What Happens Next?

The immediate future remains highly uncertain. The United States has indicated that further responses to Iranian actions are possible, and Israel has demonstrated a willingness to take unilateral action. The potential for miscalculation and escalation remains high. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation are ongoing, but their prospects for success are unclear. The focus will likely be on preventing further attacks on critical infrastructure and maintaining the flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz. Continued monitoring of the situation and potential adjustments to energy supply chains will be crucial in the coming weeks and months.

The situation is fluid and developing. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
