Gunther WrestleMania 42: Potential Rey Mysterio Match & WWE Plans
Gunther’s participation in Wrestlemania 42 remains on track despite a recent absence from WWE television and uncertainty surrounding a potential opponent, according to multiple reports.
The Ring General has not wrestled since defeating Dragon Lee on the March 2, 2026, edition of Raw, sparking speculation about his status for the April event in Las Vegas. Although, sources within WWE have indicated to WrestleVotes Radio, as reported by Fightful Select and SEScoops, that the promotion still intends for Gunther to have a “substantial role” at Wrestlemania 42.
The original plan for Gunther centered around a feud with Dragon Lee culminating in a match against Rey Mysterio, according to Bodyslam+ and WrestleVotes Radio. That plan was disrupted when Mysterio suffered fractured ribs prior to the Royal Rumble in January, sidelining the veteran wrestler. Mysterio had previously missed seven months in 2025 due to injuries, including a torn groin and ruptured eardrum.
As of March 26, 2026, Mysterio’s availability for Wrestlemania 42 hinges on medical clearance, with WWE sources indicating Gunther’s match plans are currently tied to Mysterio’s recovery. The possibility remains that Gunther could miss the event altogether if Mysterio is unable to compete, though WWE believes having him on the card is beneficial.
Gunther’s most recent high-profile appearance came at the 2026 Royal Rumble, where he retired AJ Styles. Prior to that, he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso last April and the Men’s Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania two years prior.
WWE has not publicly commented on alternative plans for Gunther should Mysterio be unable to wrestle at Wrestlemania 42.
