Hezbollah Warns Northern Israel Towns to Evacuate After Beirut Strikes

Hezbollah Warns Northern Israel Towns to Evacuate After Beirut Strikes

March 6, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

BEIRUT – Hezbollah has warned residents of 23 Israeli settlements near the border to evacuate, escalating tensions in a conflict that is rapidly expanding beyond direct exchanges of fire. The warning, issued on Tuesday, March 5th, 2026, is presented as a response to Israeli strikes targeting Beirut and other areas of Lebanon, according to a statement released by the group.

Hezbollah called for the immediate departure of anyone living within a 5-kilometer radius of the Lebanon-Israel border. The statement, mirroring the style of Israeli military warnings, declared that “aggression by your army against Lebanese sovereignty, the targeting of peaceful civilians, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and its displacement campaigns will not go unanswered.” The named settlements include Saar, Beit Hillel, Kfar Giladi, Manara, Misgav Am, Yiftah, Ramot Naftali, Malkia, Avivim, Yir’on, Dovev, Shtula, Zar’it, Shomera, Even Menachem, Adamit, Shlomi, and Nahariya.

The escalation follows days of intensified cross-border attacks. Israeli forces have been conducting airstrikes across Lebanon, including in the southern suburbs of Beirut, while Hezbollah has responded with rocket and drone launches into Israel. The recent strikes in Beirut targeted a building housing Al-Manar, a television channel affiliated with Hezbollah, after an evacuation warning was issued. Footage captured by the Associated Press showed explosions and smoke plumes rising over the Lebanese capital on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026.

The current conflict represents a significant widening of regional instability, already strained by the ongoing war between the United States, Israel and Iran. According to reports, the recent Hezbollah actions were, in part, a response to the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an attack on his compound in Tehran on Saturday, March 1st, 2026. While Hezbollah’s initial rocket and drone attacks were described as largely symbolic, Israel’s retaliation has been forceful, prompting fears of a prolonged operation.

The impact on civilians is already substantial. The Lebanese government reports that nearly 85,000 people have been displaced, and thousands of residents have fled villages in southern Lebanon. Images show displaced families gathering in Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square and along the Mediterranean promenade. Reports indicate that some Lebanese citizens are fleeing across the border into Syria, seeking refuge from the escalating violence. The BBC reported that at least 30,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon, according to the UN.

Israel has sent troops into southern Lebanon, and has told residents of more than 80 villages to evacuate. The Israeli military stated on Tuesday that soldiers were “operating in southern Lebanon” as strikes against Hezbollah continued. This marks a significant escalation, suggesting a potential ground offensive.

The situation is further complicated by Lebanon’s internal vulnerabilities. The BBC notes that Hezbollah is “battered and isolated,” and is dragging Lebanon into another war. The country has been grappling with a severe economic crisis and political instability for months, making it particularly susceptible to the destabilizing effects of the renewed conflict. The previous devastating 13-month war, which ended in 2024, saw continued Israeli bombing of Lebanon almost daily, with Israel claiming Hezbollah was attempting to rebuild its capabilities.

The renewed conflict raises concerns about a wider regional conflagration. The involvement of Hezbollah, backed by Iran, adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation. The potential for miscalculation and escalation is high, and the humanitarian consequences are likely to be severe. The Lebanese government finds itself caught in the middle, struggling to cope with the influx of displaced persons and the destruction of infrastructure.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, but concrete steps to de-escalate the conflict remain elusive. The PBS Newshour reported that Israel continued waves of heavy airstrikes in Beirut after Hezbollah began firing on Israel in support of Iran. The long-term implications of this renewed conflict for Lebanon, Israel, and the wider region remain uncertain, but the immediate priority is to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives.
