March 15, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

A Polish aerobatic pilot and flight instructor died on March 9, 2026, after falling from a hot air balloon over Zielona Góra, Poland. Jagoda Gancarek, born in 1998, was a rising star in Polish aviation, holding the national women’s championship title in ballooning and working as a pilot and flight instructor.

The incident occurred as the balloon was descending towards the Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej airfield in Przylepie, having departed from Zatonie. According to a statement from the Zielona Góra District Prosecutor’s Office, the balloon struck a building on Krzywoustego Street, causing Gancarek to fall onto the roof. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered.

Two other women were on board the balloon and were transported to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, authorities said. The District Prosecutor’s Office and the State Commission for Accident Investigation are investigating the cause of the accident.

A Rising Star in Polish Aviation

Gancarek was a member of the Ballooning National Team and had been working at the Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej since 2022. She completed pilot training at the club and subsequently became a flight instructor, also piloting aircraft used for firefighting operations. The Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej expressed its deep sorrow in a social media post, describing Gancarek as a passionate and dedicated aviator.

“With great sadness, we inform you of the tragic death of our colleague, pilot Jagoda Gancarek from the Lubusz Aeroclub,” the club stated. “Jagoda realized her passion working as a flight instructor. She also flew as a firefighting pilot. She had extensive aviation experience and was happy to share it with others.”

Gancarek’s recent achievements included winning the Polish Women’s Championship in ballooning at the 11th Women’s Balloon Championships in Nałęczów in 2025. The Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej highlighted her dedication and love for flying, stating she would be remembered for her enthusiasm and commitment.

“We will remember her for her passion and dedication, and above all for her wide smile and love of flying. Her commitment and aviation enthusiasm also fueled our activities. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and all members of the Lubusz Aeroclub,” the club’s statement concluded.

Nominee for National Aviation Award

Prior to her death, Gancarek was nominated for the Cumulus 2026 aviation award, a prestigious national prize in Poland recognizing achievements in aviation. This nomination underscores her growing recognition within the Polish aviation community.

Funeral Arrangements

A funeral service for Jagoda Gancarek is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in her hometown, according to Jasica Funeral Home in Poland.

The loss of Jagoda Gancarek represents a significant blow to the Polish aviation community. Her dedication to flying, combined with her role as an instructor and firefighter pilot, demonstrated a commitment to both the technical skill and the public service aspects of aviation. The ongoing investigation will seek to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic accident, and will likely focus on the mechanical condition of the balloon and any potential environmental factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The tragedy highlights the inherent risks associated with ballooning, a sport and activity that relies on precise weather conditions and careful operation. Even as ballooning is generally considered a safe activity, accidents can occur, and the loss of a skilled and experienced pilot like Gancarek serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers involved.
