Iran Apologizes for Attacks as Conflict with US & Allies Escalates

Iran Apologizes for Attacks as Conflict with US & Allies Escalates

March 7, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s president apologized Saturday for attacks on “neighboring countries” even as its missiles and drones flew toward Gulf Arab states and U.S. President Donald Trump threatened that the country would be “hit incredibly hard.” The apology comes amid escalating tensions following the February 28th death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, part of the three-member leadership council overseeing Iran since Ayatollah Khamenei’s death, delivered the message a week into the conflict that has rattled global markets and left Iran’s leadership weakened by hundreds of airstrikes. Pezeshkian’s apology was delivered even as Iranian missiles and drones disrupted flights at Dubai International Airport, targeted a major Saudi oil facility, and prompted evacuations in Bahrain.

Pezeshkian also dismissed Trump’s call for Iran to surrender unconditionally, stating, “That’s a dream that they should seize to their grave.” This defiant stance underscores the complex power dynamics within Iran, where the authority of the interim leadership council appears limited by the influence of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which controls a significant arsenal of ballistic missiles.

A Shifting Landscape in Iranian Leadership

The current situation highlights a critical juncture for Iran, nearly four decades after Ayatollah Khamenei assumed leadership following the 1989 death of Ruhollah Khomeini, the country’s founding supreme leader. Khamenei’s long tenure shaped Iran’s domestic and foreign policy, and his death has created a power vacuum as the country navigates this period of intense conflict. The process for selecting a recent supreme leader remains unclear, with prominent cleric Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi urging the Assembly of Experts to expedite the process.

The apology from Pezeshkian, whereas seemingly conciliatory, was followed by conflicting statements from Iranian officials. Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi, Iran’s armed forces spokesman, suggested that attacks were limited to countries providing support for U.S. Military operations, a statement that contradicts the reported strikes on Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. This internal discord points to potential divisions within the Iranian government regarding the appropriate response to the ongoing conflict.

Escalating Conflict and U.S. Response

The Trump administration has approved a new $151 million arms sale to Israel and warned of an impending bombing campaign that officials claim will be the most intense yet. Associated Press reporting indicates explosions over western Tehran as Israel conducted further airstrikes, targeting an airport reportedly used for transferring weapons and funds to militant groups. The U.S. Has also directly engaged in military action, with reports of a U.S. Submarine sinking the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka.

The fighting has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 1,230 deaths reported in Iran, over 200 in Lebanon, and 11 in Israel, according to officials in those countries. Six U.S. Troops have also been killed. Incoming missiles from Iran have prompted renewed activation of bomb shelters across Israel, though immediate reports of casualties were unavailable.

Regional Impact: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai

The conflict is rapidly expanding beyond Iran’s borders, with strikes targeting Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Bahrain experienced siren alerts as it was targeted by Iranian attacks. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting drones aimed at the Shaybah oil field and a ballistic missile directed toward Prince Sultan Air Base, which hosts U.S. Forces. Dubai International Airport temporarily suspended flights as a precautionary measure after explosions were heard and air defenses were activated.

The disruption to air travel in Dubai, a major global transit hub, underscores the broader economic consequences of the conflict. Emirates, a major airline, temporarily suspended flights to and from Dubai before resuming operations. The instability is also impacting global oil markets, as concerns grow about potential disruptions to supply from the region.

Clashes in Lebanon and Naval Developments

The conflict is also intensifying in Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah has engaged in clashes with Israeli forces. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported at least 41 deaths and 40 injuries resulting from Israeli airstrikes on Nabi Chit and surrounding areas, including three Lebanese soldiers. Israel has not officially acknowledged the fighting, but reports indicate ongoing airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of Hezbollah.

In a separate development, India’s foreign minister confirmed that an Iranian naval vessel, the IRIS Lavan, has docked in India after requesting assistance. This follows the sinking of another Iranian warship, the IRIS Dena, by a U.S. Submarine. Both vessels previously participated in naval exercises hosted by India, highlighting the complex geopolitical relationships in the region. The assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has clearly destabilized the region.

What Happens Next?

The immediate future remains highly uncertain. While Pezeshkian offered an apology and a call for diplomacy, the conflicting statements from other Iranian officials and the continued military actions suggest a prolonged period of instability. The U.S. Has signaled its intention to escalate military pressure, and Israel is likely to continue its strikes against Iranian targets. The selection of a new supreme leader in Iran will be a crucial factor in determining the country’s future course. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with concerns growing about the potential for a wider regional conflict. President Trump has repeatedly stated he will not negotiate with Iran without unconditional surrender, a position that further complicates the prospects for a peaceful resolution.
