Iran Attacks Tel Aviv: Retaliation for Larijani’s Death & Escalating Conflict

Iran Attacks Tel Aviv: Retaliation for Larijani’s Death & Escalating Conflict

March 18, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Tel Aviv, Israel – Iran launched a barrage of missiles targeting Tel Aviv early Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in what it described as retaliation for the killing of Ali Larijani, a senior figure in Iran’s security apparatus. The attack, utilizing missiles equipped with fragmentation warheads, resulted in at least two deaths in central Israel, bringing the total death toll from the ongoing conflict to at least fourteen.

According to Israeli officials, the Iranian missiles employed fragmentation bombs, designed to disperse numerous smaller explosives over a wide area, making interception exceptionally tricky. The assault on the densely populated city of Tel Aviv marks a significant escalation in hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, following an Israeli offensive within Iran.

The Iranian state television reported the attack as a direct response to the assassination of Larijani, who served as the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. This makes him the highest-ranking official to be targeted since the conflict’s outset, when a reported Israeli strike killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Further compounding the tensions, a projectile struck near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran on Tuesday evening, March 17, 2026. Iranian authorities informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the incident caused no damage or casualties. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi has repeatedly urged maximum restraint from all parties to mitigate the risk of a nuclear accident during the conflict.

The United States and Israel have stated that a key objective of their military operations is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The recent strikes, including those that reportedly killed Larijani and Khamenei, are presented as steps towards achieving this goal.

The confirmation of Larijani’s death came from the Iranian government on Tuesday. Alongside Larijani, his son and deputy, Alireza Bayat, were also reportedly killed in an Israeli attack on Monday night, March 16, 2026. These targeted killings underscore a pattern of selective assassinations within the context of the broader conflict.

The unfolding events occur as the war between the US and Israel against Iran shows no indication of de-escalation. Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, has reportedly rejected proposals for de-escalation or a ceasefire with the United States. According to a senior Iranian official, Khamenei stated that “it is not the right time for peace until the United States and Israel are subjugated, accept defeat, and pay reparations.”

The official did not clarify whether Khamenei participated in the foreign policy meeting in person or remotely, as he has not yet appeared in public photographs or television broadcasts since his appointment last week.

The attacks and counter-attacks are taking place against a backdrop of disruption to regional oil exports. Iraq has resumed limited oil exports via Turkey, with an initial capacity of 250,000 barrels per day, following a period of disruption caused by the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. Prior to the war, Iraq shipped approximately 3.5 million barrels of oil per day through the strait, with crude oil sales accounting for 90% of the country’s budget revenues. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies, has been effectively closed by Iran in response to the offensive by the US and Israel, impacting as much as a fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. The targeting of high-ranking Iranian officials and infrastructure, coupled with the rejection of diplomatic overtures, suggests a deepening commitment to military confrontation. The international community continues to call for restraint, but the path towards a peaceful resolution remains uncertain.
