Iran Attacks: THAAD Systems, Civilian Targets & Regional Escalation

Iran Attacks: THAAD Systems, Civilian Targets & Regional Escalation

March 7, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The escalating tensions in the Middle East have taken a new turn with reports of attacks targeting radar systems crucial to US missile defense infrastructure in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Satellite imagery analyzed by CNN indicates significant damage to a THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) radar system in Jordan, while facilities housing similar systems in the UAE have also been struck.

The attack on the THAAD radar system, located at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, appears to have occurred in the days following the March 1st or March 2nd, according to analysis of satellite images taken on March 2nd. The images reveal debris surrounding a blackened radar, with evidence of at least two craters approximately four meters in diameter suggesting multiple strikes were required to inflict the damage. The system, comprised of five trailers, appears to have been either destroyed or severely damaged.

The THAAD system at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base is located over 800 kilometers from Iran. The radar itself, a Raytheon-manufactured AN/TPY-2 transportable radar, carries a price tag of nearly $500 million, according to a 2025 budget from the US Missile Defense Agency.

In the UAE, buildings housing similar radar systems were hit at two locations, though the extent of the damage to the equipment remains unclear. These attacks, alongside the strike in Jordan, suggest a deliberate attempt by Iran to degrade air defenses capable of detecting incoming missiles and drones, according to CNN’s analysis.

The attacks come amid heightened regional instability following strikes by the US and Israel against targets in Iran. On March 3rd, the UAE’s Ministry of Defense announced its air defense systems intercepted ballistic missiles launched from Iran, according to the state-run Emirates News Agency (WAM). The same day, a drone attack caused damage to a petroleum storage facility in Fujairah, a strategically important location for oil pipelines connecting to the Gulf of Oman. While the fire has since been extinguished, the incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the region.

UAE defense officials stated that their systems intercepted 11 ballistic missiles and 123 drones on March 3rd alone. One missile landed within the country, but caused no casualties. Since February 28th, the UAE has reportedly detected 186 ballistic missiles, intercepting 172, with 13 falling into the sea and one impacting within the country. 812 drones were detected, of which 755 were intercepted and 57 fell within the UAE, along with eight cruise missiles that were also detected and intercepted.

The United States Central Command has condemned Iran’s actions, accusing the country of targeting civilian infrastructure, including residential areas in Bahrain. Reports indicate that drones were launched towards Bahraini housing, though details remain limited.

The attacks on radar systems are particularly concerning as these systems are integral to the operation of THAAD, a high-performance missile interceptor system designed to engage and destroy ballistic missiles in flight. The US operates eight THAAD batteries, with the UAE operating two and Saudi Arabia one. Reports also indicate that a THAAD-related facility in Saudi Arabia was also targeted, though details are still emerging.

In response to the escalating situation, the US State Department has raised the travel danger level to 3 out of 4 for several countries in the region, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen are already at the highest risk level of 4. The move reflects growing concerns for the safety of US citizens in the region.

The attacks on these radar systems represent a significant escalation in the current conflict, potentially weakening the defensive capabilities of the US and its allies in the region. The deliberate targeting of these assets suggests a calculated effort to undermine the ability to respond to further attacks and complicates the already volatile security landscape in the Middle East. The long-term implications of these strikes remain to be seen, but they undoubtedly raise the stakes in the ongoing tensions between Iran and its regional adversaries.
