Iran-Israel Conflict: Latest Updates on Attacks and Tensions | Manorama Online

Iran-Israel Conflict: Latest Updates on Attacks and Tensions | Manorama Online

March 16, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The conflict in the Middle East entered its third week on Monday, with escalating tensions marked by continued strikes and diplomatic efforts. While reports indicate a potential willingness from the United States to engage in talks with Iran, a resolution remains elusive as Israel continues to launch wide-scale strikes targeting infrastructure within Iran. The situation is further complicated by regional fallout, including attacks on commercial shipping and infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.

US President Donald Trump confirmed ongoing discussions with Iranian officials, stating, “Yes, we’re talking to them,” but expressed skepticism about Tehran’s readiness for a deal. “But I don’t think they’re ready. But they are getting pretty close,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One. This confirmation comes despite earlier denials from Iran’s foreign minister regarding any direct talks with the US. The ambiguity surrounding the nature and progress of these discussions underscores the complexity of the situation.

Simultaneously, the Israeli military announced a novel wave of “wide-scale” strikes targeting what it described as Iranian “terror regime infrastructure” in Tehran. This escalation follows a pattern of increasingly assertive Israeli action since the conflict began on February 28th, initially triggered by attacks targeting Iran’s missile infrastructure, military sites, and leadership. The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, in the initial strikes, and the subsequent appointment of his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor, have further inflamed tensions.

Recent reports suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei has been wounded in further strikes, though Iranian officials have dismissed these claims as unfounded. Regardless, the continued targeting of key figures and infrastructure within Iran demonstrates Israel’s commitment to disrupting Iran’s military capabilities and potentially its nuclear program, which Iran maintains is entirely peaceful.

The economic consequences of the conflict are becoming increasingly apparent, particularly concerning the disruption of vital shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit route for global oil supplies, remains effectively closed to most tankers. President Trump has indicated that other countries will be sending naval assets to ensure the waterway remains open, naming China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK as potential contributors. However, as of Monday, none of these nations have officially confirmed their participation.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has prompted the deployment of a rapid response marine unit by the US Pentagon, signaling a heightened commitment to safeguarding maritime traffic. The economic fallout is also impacting regional stability, with the European Union announcing $525 million in humanitarian aid for West Asia.

The conflict has extended beyond direct attacks between Iran, Israel, and the US, with repercussions felt across the Gulf region. The United Arab Emirates has been targeted by attacks, including a recent drone attack on a major oil hub, and has intercepted missiles and drones launched from Iran. On Saturday, UAE air defenses reportedly intercepted six missiles and 21 drones originating from Iran. A missile strike in Abu Dhabi resulted in the death of a Palestinian national, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities in the UAE to seven.

Further complicating the situation, Iran’s military warned it could target ports and docks in the United Arab Emirates in retaliation for a US strike on the critical Iranian oil export hub of Kharg Island. This threat underscores the potential for further escalation and the widening scope of the conflict. The US maintains that the strike on Kharg Island avoided hitting vital oil infrastructure, but the potential for disruption to Iran’s economic lifeline remains significant.

Amidst the escalating tensions, several vessels have begun to depart the region, including the Indian oil tanker ‘Jag Ladki’ which left the Fujairah oil terminal in the UAE after loading 80,800 tons of Murban crude oil. This departure, along with others, reflects a growing concern for the safety of commercial shipping in the area. Qatar’s defense ministry also reported intercepting and destroying drones launched from Iran targeting the country.

The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. Diplomatic efforts, while ongoing, have yet to yield a breakthrough. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, seeking a path towards de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The long-term implications of this crisis for regional stability and global energy markets remain uncertain.
