Iran Launches Missiles at Israel: Tel Aviv Under Attack

Iran Launches Missiles at Israel: Tel Aviv Under Attack

March 13, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Tel Aviv – A barrage of ballistic missiles launched from Iran struck central Israel late Friday, triggering air raid sirens across the country and prompting a swift response from Israeli defense systems. The attack, confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and follows a period of heightened conflict between Iran and the US-Israel coalition.

The IDF reported intercepting a number of the incoming projectiles, but several impacted across central Israel, including in the vicinity of Tel Aviv and Petah Tikva. Emergency services are currently operating at multiple impact sites, assessing damage and providing medical assistance to the injured. According to initial reports from Magen David Adom ambulance service, six people were wounded, one seriously, in Tel Aviv, while five others sustained injuries in Petah Tikva, including one man in moderate condition and three with minor injuries.

The Iranian attack appears to have utilized cluster munitions, according to police officials who noted the widespread dispersal of impact sites. This suggests the missiles were designed to spread smaller bombs over a wider area, potentially increasing the risk to civilian populations. The IDF has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the impacts.

The strikes come after a day of escalating hostilities. Earlier on Sunday, March 8, 2026, Iran launched nine salvos of ballistic missiles and drones at Tel Aviv and Petah Tikva, with Israeli air defense systems reportedly intercepting several. Prior to that, five earlier salvos targeting Israel throughout Sunday morning caused no serious injuries, according to reports.

Simultaneously, the conflict has expanded beyond direct Israeli-Iranian exchanges. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group operating in Lebanon, claimed responsibility for an attack on an Israeli drone control base in Safed, northern Israel, launching a barrage of rockets as part of what they termed “Operation al-Quds Day.”

The attacks on Israel follow extensive Israeli strikes against Iranian infrastructure over the preceding days. Israeli forces targeted oil facilities near Tehran, including the Aghdasieh oil storage facility, a refinery south of the capital and the Shahran oil depot. Reports emerged of “black rain” falling in areas surrounding Tehran, suggesting significant damage and the release of pollutants. The extent of the damage to these Iranian facilities remains unclear.

A particularly concerning development is the reported strike on Israel’s largest power plant, the Orot Rabin facility in Hadera, located 45 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. This attack resulted in a complete blackout in Tel Aviv, disrupting essential services and raising concerns about the broader impact on the country’s infrastructure. The Orot Rabin plant accounts for approximately 19 percent of Israel’s total electricity output.

The current escalation represents a dangerous turn in the ongoing conflict, which has been described as a “war of aggression” against Iran. The exchange of attacks underscores the fragility of the regional security situation and the potential for further escalation. The involvement of Hezbollah adds another layer of complexity, raising the risk of a wider regional conflict.

While the immediate focus is on containing the current escalation, the underlying causes of the conflict remain unresolved. The ongoing tensions are rooted in a complex web of geopolitical factors, including Iran’s nuclear program, its regional ambitions, and its support for proxy groups. The US-Israel alliance and its perceived hostility towards Iran are also key drivers of the conflict.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for restraint and de-escalation. However, the prospects for a swift resolution appear dim, given the deep-seated animosity and mistrust between the parties involved. The potential for miscalculation and unintended consequences remains high, raising concerns about a further deterioration of the security situation in the Middle East.

The impact of these attacks extends beyond the immediate physical damage and casualties. The disruption to essential services, such as electricity, and the psychological toll on civilians are significant. The economic consequences of the conflict are also likely to be substantial, particularly for Israel and Iran.

As search and rescue operations continue in Israel and assessments of the damage in Iran are underway, the immediate priority is to prevent further escalation and protect civilian populations. However, the long-term implications of this latest round of conflict remain uncertain, and the region faces a period of heightened instability and risk.
