Iran War: Israel Strikes Tehran, US Evacuates Citizens – Updates

Iran War: Israel Strikes Tehran, US Evacuates Citizens – Updates

March 4, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The conflict in Iran entered its fifth day on Wednesday, with Israel conducting a recent series of strikes targeting Tehran, although Iranian authorities postponed planned public mourning ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The U.S. Central Command reported that these strikes have “severely degraded” Iran’s defenses, claiming the destruction of hundreds of ballistic missile launchers and drones, as well as 17 Iranian ships, including its most operational submarine.

Escalation and Retaliation

The Israeli military stated Wednesday that a “broad wave of strikes” focused on internal security command centers within Tehran, alongside missile launchers and other systems. This action follows the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint U.S.-Israel strikes over the weekend, an event that triggered retaliatory attacks from Tehran across the region. Iran’s state media announced the postponement of three days of funeral ceremonies for Khamenei, citing an “overwhelming response” from the public, with no new date yet specified.

The scale of Iran’s response has been significant, with reports of over 500 ballistic missiles and more than 2,000 drones launched. The U.S. Military has deployed 50,000 troops, 200 fighter jets, and two aircraft carriers to the Middle East in response, a level of force not seen since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Some U.S. Senators have expressed concerns about potential escalation and the possibility of deploying “boots on the ground,” as noted by Senator Richard Blumenthal following a briefing with the Trump administration.

Regional Impacts and Diplomatic Sites Under Attack

The conflict is extending beyond Iran’s borders. U.S. Diplomatic sites have been targeted in several countries. On Tuesday, drones struck near the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, prompting a warning to American citizens to shelter in place. Similar incidents occurred near the U.S. Consulate in Dubai and led to the closure of the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described these attacks as originating from a “terrorist regime.”

Inside Iran, Israel targeted the building housing the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting a new supreme leader. A school in Iran was similarly struck on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of over 160 students and 14 teachers, though Israel denies responsibility for this particular strike.

U.S. Assessment of Iranian Capabilities

U.S. Central Command, in a statement released Tuesday, asserted that Iran’s air defenses, ballistic missile launchers, and drones have been “severely degraded” following the strikes. Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, described the operation as “ahead of our game plan.” Still, the extent of this degradation and its long-term impact remain to be seen. Analysts suggest that Russia and China are unlikely to provide substantial military aid to Iran, offering primarily rhetorical support.

Evacuation Challenges for American Citizens

The U.S. State Department is working to facilitate the evacuation of American citizens from the region, but many are facing significant challenges. Thousands of Americans are stranded, with reports of long wait times to reach State Department assistance lines and difficulties securing flights. The State Department is arranging military aircraft and charter flights, covering the costs for evacuees, and has assisted over 9,000 Americans in leaving the region. However, evacuations are complicated by airspace closures and logistical hurdles. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem is advising Americans to consider crossing into Egypt by land. Reports from travelers detail frustration and anxiety as they attempt to navigate the rapidly changing situation.

Casualties and Ongoing Investigations

The conflict has resulted in casualties on multiple sides. The Pentagon has identified six U.S. Service members killed in a drone attack in Kuwait. Iranian officials report at least 787 deaths within Iran, while Israeli officials state that 11 people have died in Israel. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the school strike and other incidents.

The Path Forward and Potential for Negotiation

President Trump has stated that the U.S. Initiated strikes on Iran because he believed Iran was preparing to launch an attack. He also suggested that the U.S. May have prompted Israel’s actions. While the administration has not outlined a clear end-game, Trump indicated that “lots of people” are coming forward to negotiate a resolution. The situation remains highly fluid and unpredictable, with the potential for further escalation.

The current focus is on containing the conflict and preventing it from spreading further. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but the prospects for a swift resolution remain uncertain. The U.S. And its allies are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential contingencies. Experts predict that 2026 may prove to be the most challenging year yet for the Islamic Republic, given prolonged economic hardship and a decline in public confidence following recent setbacks.
