Iran War: NATO Won’t Intervene as Trump Demands Allies Act in Strait of Hormuz

Iran War: NATO Won’t Intervene as Trump Demands Allies Act in Strait of Hormuz

March 16, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

The escalating conflict in the Middle East, initiated by US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has prompted a sharp divergence in international responses. Whereas the United States presses allies for support in securing the Strait of Hormuz, Germany has firmly stated that the war is “not a matter for NATO.” This disagreement underscores the complex geopolitical landscape and the challenges of forging a unified approach to the crisis.

The US President has repeatedly called on nations – including China, France, South Korea and the United Kingdom – to assist in ensuring the safe passage of oil tankers through the strategically vital shipping lane, which is currently threatened by potential Iranian action. He has also increased pressure on NATO members, warning of a “very terrible” future for the alliance if they fail to contribute to reopening the strait. This demand for assistance highlights the US concern over potential disruptions to global energy supplies and the broader economic implications of the conflict.

However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has countered this call for collective action, asserting that the conflict is outside the scope of NATO’s mandate. “It has been clear at all times that this war is not a matter for NATO,” Merz stated, adding that neither the US nor Israel consulted with Germany prior to initiating military action. He explicitly ruled out any German military contribution to securing the Strait of Hormuz, stating, “For as long as the war continues, we will not be involved in ensuring free passage in the Strait of Hormuz by military means.”

Germany’s Position and NATO’s Role

Merz’s position is echoed by his spokesman, Stefan Kornelius, who emphasized that NATO is an alliance designed for the defense of territory and lacks the mandate for deployment in this particular situation. This stance reflects a broader European reluctance to become directly involved in a conflict that is perceived as primarily a US-Israel initiative. The differing perspectives highlight the internal tensions within the transatlantic alliance and the challenges of coordinating a response to the crisis.

The situation is further complicated by concerns within the European Union regarding a potential refugee crisis stemming from the conflict in Iran. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged the possibility of increased migratory flows towards Europe and emphasized the need to mobilize all available diplomatic resources to address the issue. She also signaled the potential for EU measures to mitigate the economic impact of the war, particularly concerning energy costs.

Escalation on Multiple Fronts

Beyond the debate over the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict is escalating on other fronts. Israel has initiated “limited ground operations” against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, responding to attacks launched by the Iran-backed group following the strikes on Iran. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that displaced Lebanese citizens would not be able to return home until northern Israel is secure. This development raises the specter of a wider regional conflict, potentially drawing in additional actors and further destabilizing the Middle East.

Adding to the regional tensions, attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates have disrupted air travel and caused casualties. A drone-related incident sparked a fuel tank fire near Dubai airport, leading to flight disruptions, while a missile strike in Abu Dhabi resulted in the death of a civilian. These attacks underscore the potential for the conflict to spill over into neighboring countries and further destabilize the region. Dubai airport has since resumed operations, but remains vulnerable.

The Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Chokepoint

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, accounting for approximately 20% of global oil consumption. Any disruption to shipping through the strait could have significant consequences for global energy markets and the world economy. The US concern over securing the strait is therefore understandable, but the lack of consensus among allies complicates efforts to address the threat. The potential for Iran to disrupt shipping in the strait remains a major source of instability.

When will Trump’s war with Iran end?

Two weeks after the US and Israel first struck Iran, Donald Trump’s timeline and end goal for the war remain uncertain.

What Happens Next?

The immediate future remains uncertain. The US is likely to continue pressing its allies for support, while European nations will likely maintain their cautious approach, prioritizing diplomatic solutions and avoiding direct military involvement. The situation in Lebanon is particularly concerning, with the potential for further escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. The attacks in the UAE demonstrate the risk of the conflict spreading to other countries in the region. The focus will likely remain on de-escalation and preventing a wider regional war, but the path forward is fraught with challenges.
