Iran’s Khamenei Reportedly Dead: Israel & Sources Confirm Attacks & Retaliation

Iran’s Khamenei Reportedly Dead: Israel & Sources Confirm Attacks & Retaliation

February 28, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Tehran, Iran – Multiple sources, including Israeli and U.S. Officials, are reporting the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a joint military operation. While Iranian state media has yet to confirm the news, the claims are gaining traction internationally, with U.S. President Donald Trump stating definitively on social media that Khamenei is “dead.”

The reports emerged on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating there were “many signs” indicating Khamenei’s demise. Netanyahu claimed the operation destroyed Khamenei’s compound in Tehran. Israeli television networks, Kan and Channel 12, also reported Khamenei’s death, though these reports remain unconfirmed by Tehran.

President Trump’s statement, delivered via social media, was particularly direct. He described Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in History” and suggested a potential shift in the Iranian security apparatus. “We are hearing that many of their IRGC, Military, and other Security and Police Forces, no longer want to fight, and are looking for Immunity from us,” Trump posted. He further indicated that military operations would continue “uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, THE WORLD!”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed in a press conference that seven Iranian officials and commanders were killed in the operation, including Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Khamenei. This suggests a targeted effort to dismantle key elements of the Iranian leadership structure.

Despite the strong assertions from Washington and Jerusalem, a degree of caution remains warranted. The lack of official confirmation from Tehran, or its foreign ministry, is significant. CBS News reported that people are “cheering in the streets of Tehran,” but independent verification of these reports is hard. Netanyahu reportedly viewed a photograph purporting to show Khamenei’s body, according to an Israeli broadcaster, but the authenticity of this image has not been independently verified.

Ayatollah Khamenei, 86, had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. His death, if confirmed, represents a pivotal moment in Iranian history and could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability.

The timing and nature of this operation are particularly noteworthy. The joint U.S.-Israeli effort signals a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and the two countries, which have long been at odds over Iran’s nuclear program, regional influence, and support for proxy groups. Trump, in his statements, characterized Khamenei as having “killed many people” and “destroyed a country,” framing the operation as a necessary step to address perceived Iranian aggression.

The potential for retaliation from Iran is high. Reports indicate Iran has already launched a series of attacks against Israel and U.S. Bases, with a third and fourth wave of attacks reported by Infobae. The scale and intensity of these counterattacks will likely shape the immediate aftermath of Khamenei’s reported death.

The international community is watching the situation closely. The potential for a wider regional conflict is significant, and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions are likely to intensify in the coming days. The absence of confirmation from Tehran adds to the uncertainty, and further developments are expected as the situation unfolds.
