Israel Issue Rises in Democratic Primaries as Support Declines

Israel Issue Rises in Democratic Primaries as Support Declines

March 18, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Across the country, from Modern Jersey to Illinois, Israel has become a more prominent issue in Democratic primaries, reflecting a broader shift in public opinion. This change comes as polling data reveals a decline in support for Israel, particularly among younger voters and those who identify as Democrats. The recent primaries, including those in Illinois on Tuesday, have seen increased engagement from progressive candidates and activists on this issue.

The shift in sentiment is particularly visible in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel and the subsequent military response in Gaza, have intensified scrutiny of U.S. Policy toward Israel. Britannica details the events of the October 7th attack, highlighting its significance as the deadliest day for Israel since its independence.

AIPAC’s Role and the Controversy

A key element of this political landscape is the involvement of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). For decades, AIPAC has been a leading lobby group advocating for pro-Israel policies and supporting candidates who align with its views. However, the group has also faced considerable controversy throughout its history. As reported by NPR, AIPAC spent tens of millions of dollars in recent primary campaigns, sparking debate and criticism. Yahoo News notes that this involvement is part of a larger shift in the region, with Israel emerging as a regional hegemon and a joint U.S.-Israeli effort underway to address perceived threats from Iran.

Historically, AIPAC has been involved in contentious political debates, including disagreements with the Carter and Bush administrations over arms sales and settlement policies. More recently, a former Pentagon analyst pleaded guilty to sharing secrets with the organization, further fueling criticism. Today, many progressives oppose AIPAC due to its strong support for Israel, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the perceived humanitarian crisis.

Shifting Public Opinion: Polling Data

The decline in support for Israel is clearly reflected in recent polling data. According to Gallup, for the first time in a quarter-century, more Americans now sympathize with Palestinians than with Israelis – 41% to 36%. This represents a significant shift from 2018, when nearly two-thirds of Americans sided with Israelis. An NBC News poll corroborates this trend, showing a similar split and a dramatic increase in sympathy for Palestinians since 2013.

The most significant changes in opinion are occurring among Democrats and young voters. Gallup data shows that Democratic sympathy for Israelis has plummeted from 58% in 2014 to just 17% currently, while support for Palestinians has surged to 65%. Among voters aged 18-34, the shift is even more pronounced, with sympathy for Palestinians now exceeding support for Israelis by a margin of 53% to 23%.

Generational and Political Divides

While Democrats and young voters are driving the most significant changes, other demographic groups are also showing a decline in support for Israel. Independents have shifted from favoring Israelis by a 63%-21% margin in 2013 to a 41%-39% preference for Palestinians as of February 2026. Those aged 35-54 have also seen a notable decrease in support for Israel, dropping from 45% to 28% in Gallup’s polling.

Conversely, older voters (55 and older) and Republicans continue to express stronger support for Israel, although even within these groups, there has been some erosion of support. Republicans still favor Israelis by a substantial margin (70% to 18%), but this is down from 87% in 2018. Older voters show a 49%-31% preference for Israelis, a decline from 65%-24% in 2023.

Implications for U.S. Policy and the Future

These shifts in public opinion have significant implications for U.S. Policy toward Israel and the broader Middle East. As support for Israel declines, particularly within the Democratic Party, there is growing pressure to reassess the long-standing U.S. Commitment to Israel and to adopt a more balanced approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The increased focus on human rights and the humanitarian situation in Gaza is also likely to influence policy decisions.

The rise of progressive candidates who are critical of Israel and the increased willingness of Democratic voters to challenge the status quo suggest that this trend is likely to continue. The involvement of groups like AIPAC in primary elections is also likely to intensify, as both sides seek to influence the outcome of these races. The ongoing war with Iran, as highlighted by Yahoo News, adds another layer of complexity to the situation, potentially further reshaping U.S. Foreign policy in the region.

Looking ahead, This proves crucial to monitor these trends closely and to understand the underlying factors driving the shift in public opinion. The outcome of future elections and the evolving dynamics in the Middle East will undoubtedly shape the future of U.S. Policy toward Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The situation remains fluid, and continued engagement with all stakeholders is essential to finding a peaceful and just resolution.
