Israel Strikes: Top Iranian Security Official & Basij Leader Reportedly Killed

Israel Strikes: Top Iranian Security Official & Basij Leader Reportedly Killed

March 17, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, that Iran’s top security official and the head of the Basij paramilitary force were killed in overnight air strikes, representing a direct blow to the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

According to Katz, both Ali Larijani, the security official, and General Gholam Reza Soleimani were “eliminated last night.” The statement did not specify the precise location of the strikes within Iran.

The Basij force, comprised exclusively of volunteer members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, is primarily used to suppress protests within Iran. Its elimination of a key commander signals a further escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Iranian state media did not immediately confirm the deaths, though reported that Larijani’s office would issue a statement in the coming hours. This delay in confirmation is consistent with past Iranian responses to similar claims of high-profile assassinations.

The news follows an announcement by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that it had carried out a wave of large-scale attacks across Iran, as well as intensified strikes against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, who are backed by Iran. The coordinated nature of these attacks suggests a broadening of the conflict’s scope.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on February 28, the first day of the conflict initiated by the United States and Israel. Since then, other senior figures within the Iranian theocracy have reportedly been targeted and killed. The targeting of Larijani and Soleimani represents a continuation of this strategy to dismantle the Iranian leadership structure.

The strikes come amid a period of heightened regional instability. The price of oil has surged, with Iranian attacks forcing production stoppages in Gulf states and disrupting exports through the vital Strait of Hormuz waterway, a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. The disruption to oil production and shipping lanes has raised concerns about a potential global economic impact.

The IDF announced that its air force carried out a “precise strike” near Tehran on Monday night, killing Ali Larijani. According to the IDF, “Following the elimination of Khamenei, Larijani consolidated his status as the de-facto leader of the Iranian regime and led the combat efforts against the State of Israel and countries across the region.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is “undermining this regime in the hope of giving the Iranian people an opportunity to remove it.”

The United States has similarly been directly involved in the escalating conflict. New video footage shows the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad targeted by a combination of drones and rockets earlier on Tuesday, according to a U.S. Official. Six of the seven projectiles were reportedly intercepted, with no injuries or serious damage reported. The attack was carried out by an Iran-aligned militia group, further illustrating the regional implications of the conflict.

Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, has resigned over the war with Iran, according to reports. Kent, a retired Green Beret and longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, cited disagreements over the handling of the conflict as the reason for his departure. His resignation highlights the internal divisions within the U.S. Government regarding the strategy in Iran.

The conflict has already resulted in a significant loss of life. More than 2,000 people have been killed across the Middle East, with over 1,200 deaths in Iran attributed to Israeli and American strikes, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society. At least 850 people have been killed in Lebanon, and 13 in Israel. Thirteen U.S. Service members have also been killed, with two additional deaths attributed to non-combat causes.

The situation remains highly volatile, with no immediate signs of de-escalation. The targeting of senior Iranian officials raises the prospect of further retaliatory attacks, potentially escalating the conflict into a wider regional war. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with concerns growing about the humanitarian consequences and the potential for broader geopolitical instability.

While Iranian authorities have yet to officially confirm the deaths of Larijani and Soleimani, the claims made by Israel, if verified, represent a significant escalation in the conflict and a direct challenge to the Iranian regime’s authority. The coming hours and days will be critical in determining the next phase of this rapidly evolving crisis.
