Jesse Jackson: Chicago Memorial Honors Civil Rights Leader

The life and legacy of Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Is being celebrated this week, culminating in a public homegoing service in Chicago today, Friday, March 6th. The service, held at the House of Hope, a megachurch on Chicago’s South Side, will honor the civil rights leader who died last month at the age of 84. Performances are scheduled from Chicago native Jennifer Hudson, as well as gospel singers Bebe Winans and Pastor Marvin Winans. Prior to the events in Chicago, Jackson’s body lay in honor at the South Carolina State House in Columbia on Monday. He will as well be honored with a formal funeral service in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday. The week-long remembrance reflects the broad impact Jackson had across the country and his enduring legacy as a champion for civil rights.

Health Challenges and Later Years

In recent years, Reverend Jackson faced several health challenges, including Parkinson’s disease and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disorder. PSP is a rare brain disorder that causes serious problems with walking, balance, eye movements, and swallowing. The cause of PSP is unknown, and there is currently no cure.
