Jupiter’s thunderstorms are also significantly taller than those on Earth, often exceeding 60 miles in height compared to Earth’s typical 6 miles. This greater vertical extent provides more space for charge separation, a crucial ingredient for lightning formation. The interplay between atmospheric composition, storm height, and convective processes is complex, and further research is needed to fully unravel the mystery of Jupiter’s supercharged lightning.
