Kharkiv Region Under Attack: Drone Strikes, Casualties & Fires – March 24 Updates

Kharkiv Region Under Attack: Drone Strikes, Casualties & Fires – March 24 Updates

March 24, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Terror in the Derhachiv Region: Attack on a Train and Escalating Drone Strikes

The situation in the Kharkiv region remains volatile, with a surge in Russian drone attacks targeting both civilian infrastructure and transportation. Recent incidents include a direct hit on a commuter train near Slobozhanske, resulting in one fatality and injuries, alongside continued strikes on settlements like Derhachi and Zolochiv. These attacks, often employing inexpensive but dangerous drones like the “Molniya,” are creating a climate of fear and prompting calls for increased air defense and evacuation of vulnerable populations.

FPV Drone Strike on Commuter Train Leaves One Dead

A Russian FPV drone directly struck a commuter train traveling between Slobozhanske and Kharkiv early on March 24th, around 05:20 local time. According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the drone impacted a carriage while the train was stationed at Slobozhanske. A 61-year-old man was killed in the attack, and the train’s driver and assistant experienced acute stress reactions. This incident highlights the increasing danger posed by drones to civilian transportation networks.

Escalating Drone Attacks on Kharkiv Region

Throughout March 24th, the Kharkiv region experienced a sustained barrage of drone attacks. Derhachi was struck by a drone, injuring an 82-year-old woman with glass shrapnel. The attack similarly damaged at least four private homes and outbuildings. In Zolochiv district, the village of Odonorobivka was hit by five “Molniya” drones, causing significant damage to a former training center laboratory, but no casualties were reported. The settlement of Kochetok was targeted by four “Geran-2” drones in the evening, causing damage but no injuries.

The “Molniya” Drone: A Growing Threat

Russian forces have increasingly deployed the “Molniya” drone in attacks on frontline cities since the autumn of 2024. Described as a cheap and relatively primitive drone, the “Molniya” is capable of carrying between 3 to 5 kilograms of explosives, making it a dangerous weapon despite its simplicity. Effective countermeasures require enhanced electronic warfare capabilities and vigilance from anti-aircraft gun crews. Reports indicate that Russian forces are frequently changing the control frequencies of these drones to hinder detection and neutralization.

Terror in the Derhachiv Region: A Near Miss for a Woman on a Scooter

Earlier in the day, around 16:00, a woman in Kazachya Lopani, Derhachiv district, narrowly avoided injury when a Russian FPV drone targeted her while she was riding a scooter. She maneuvered to avoid the drone, falling off the scooter and sustaining a minor eye injury and a mild concussion. Local authorities emphasized the ongoing danger posed by drones near the border and reiterated the importance of evacuation for residents.

Firefighting Efforts and Infrastructure Damage

Throughout the day, firefighters responded to 24 fires across the Kharkiv region, including two ignited by Russian strikes. A fire broke out in Derhachi following the drone attack, and another occurred in the Osnovyansky district of Kharkiv. In Zolochiv district, the village of Makarovo lost power and gas supply due to the attacks.

Calls for Evacuation and Increased Air Defense

Amidst the escalating attacks, officials are urging residents of frontline communities to evacuate to safer areas. The head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleg Synegubov, noted that the attacks on ambulances highlight the need for equipping emergency vehicles with electronic warfare systems. He also emphasized the importance of evacuation for those living in particularly vulnerable areas.

What We Know and What Remains Unclear

Confirmed details include the types of drones used in the attacks (“Molniya,” “Geran-2,” FPV drones), the locations targeted (Derhachi, Slobozhanske, Zolochiv, Kochetok, Kazachya Lopani, Makarovo), and the resulting damage and casualties. However, details regarding the specific tactics employed by Russian forces and the full extent of the damage to infrastructure remain under investigation. The number of drones used in some attacks is also still being determined.

The situation in the Kharkiv region is rapidly evolving, and residents are urged to stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities.
