Landscapes Parks Get €2.25M Funding Boost in Belgium & Netherlands

March 25, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Limburg’s Landscape Parks Set for Boost with €1.5 Million Investment – “Maasklassen” on the Horizon?

The Flemish government is allocating €1.5 million to support three landscape parks within the Limburg province, officials announced Wednesday. This investment, part of a larger €2.4 million commitment to all five recognized landscape parks in Flanders, aims to bolster long-term operations and facilitate concrete projects focused on landscape management, nature connectivity and sustainable agriculture. The funding comes as the parks, officially recognized in October 2023, gain momentum as collaborative spaces for local governments, farmers, organizations, and residents.

The three Limburg parks set to benefit are RivierPark Maasvallei, Hart van Haspengouw, and Grenzeloos Bocageland. Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Jo Brouns, highlighted the investment as a strategic move to capitalize on the region’s potential for tourism and economic growth, referring to the possibility of “Maasklassen” – river-based educational trips – as an alternative to traditional coastal excursions.

A Focus on Long-Term Sustainability

This funding isn’t a one-time grant. it’s intended to solidify the parks’ operational footing. After an initial phase in 2024 and a full work year in 2025, the park offices are now operating at full capacity, ready to implement ambitious plans for 2026. These plans center around building upon the successes of the previous year and launching new initiatives.

A key area of focus will be water management and climate adaptation, with an emphasis on nature-based solutions for water buffering and drought mitigation. The investment will also deepen collaboration with local farmers, promoting regenerative agricultural practices like no-till farming through learning networks and tailored guidance. This collaborative approach, Brouns emphasized, is crucial – moving away from top-down policy and embracing solutions developed with farmers, nature organizations, and local entrepreneurs.

Beyond Agriculture: Identity, Economy, and Tourism

The benefits extend beyond agricultural improvements. The funding will also support initiatives designed to strengthen regional identity and boost the local economy. Streekproductenmarkten – local produce markets – and the development of “voedsellandschappen” (food landscapes) are intended to connect farmers, businesses, and tourists, fostering a more integrated and sustainable regional ecosystem. Projects aimed at enhancing landscape quality, such as developing area visions for ecological infrastructure and supporting hedgerow planting on farms, are also planned.

What are Landscape Parks?

Landscape parks in Flanders are designated areas where local authorities, farmers, civil society organizations, and residents collaborate to manage and enhance the quality of the landscape. They were formally recognized in October 2023 and represent a new approach to regional development, prioritizing integrated solutions that balance environmental protection, economic viability, and social cohesion. The five recognized parks are: Zwinstreek, Vlaamse Ardennen, Grenzeloos Bocageland, Landschapspark Haspengouw, and RivierPark Maasvallei. You can find more information about the Vlaamse Ardennen and their initiatives here.

Limburg Takes the Lead

With three of the five recognized landscape parks located within its borders, Limburg is set to receive the largest share of the €2.4 million investment – nearly €1.5 million. Minister Brouns justified this concentration of funds by emphasizing the region’s unique landscapes and its potential as a driver of economic growth through tourism. He specifically pointed to the potential for “Maasklassen” – educational trips focused on the Maas River – as a novel offering that could attract visitors and generate revenue. This concept, as reported by VRT News, suggests a shift in educational tourism away from traditional coastal trips.

Funding Breakdown and Allocation

Each of the three Limburg parks – RivierPark Maasvallei, Hart van Haspengouw, and Grenzeloos Bocageland – will receive approximately €489,000 annually. This funding will be deployed across a diverse range of projects, tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of each park. For example, RivierPark Maasvallei will prioritize cross-border collaboration with the Netherlands and on-the-ground initiatives. The Vlaamse Ardennen, another landscape park, has already received €500,000 to strengthen the natural environment and Maas villages, as detailed here by Nieuwsblad.

What Happens Next?

The landscape parks will now finalize their project plans and begin implementation in 2026. The success of these initiatives will be closely monitored, with a focus on achieving tangible results in areas such as water management, agricultural sustainability, and tourism development. The Flemish government has indicated its commitment to providing ongoing support to the parks, recognizing their potential to contribute to a more resilient and prosperous future for the region.

This investment represents a significant step towards realizing the vision of integrated landscape management in Flanders, and the potential for “Maasklassen” offers a glimpse into a future where education and tourism are seamlessly intertwined with the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
