Latvian Expert Analyzes US Policy & Key Understandings
The increasingly fraught relationship between the United States and Europe, coupled with escalating global tensions, is being viewed with satisfaction by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Jānis Sārts, Director of NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence.
Speaking on Latvian Television’s “Rīta Panorāma” program on , Sārts stated that Putin sits and happily rubs his hands
watching the discord between Europe and the United States. The observation underscores a growing concern that geopolitical fractures are creating opportunities for Russia to advance its interests.
Sārts’ assessment comes amid a period of heightened transatlantic tension, particularly concerning the approach of U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration. He noted a growing spree between U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders,
a dynamic that is creating uncertainty and potentially weakening the Western alliance.
The analysis highlights a broader trend of increasing global instability. Sārts pointed to a proliferation of pressure points around the world
and the increasing integration of technology into conflicts. He specifically referenced the situation involving the United States and Iran, observing that Washington is becoming increasingly involved
in that particular theatre of operations.
The comments follow a December 12, 2025, assessment by Sārts that the United States, under President Trump, communicates its global interests and strategies with a level of directness often absent in European diplomacy. He contrasted the American approach – which he described as authentic and direct
– with the complex and convoluted
communication style often favored in Europe, where the underlying message can be tricky to discern.
While acknowledging that this directness can sometimes be perceived as blunt, Sārts suggested it often represents a more honest articulation of national interests. He noted that the recent U.S. Security strategy was quite honest and direct
in outlining its priorities, both globally and in relation to Europe, openly acknowledging the importance of the continent while also identifying perceived ideological errors
within it.
Sārts also touched upon the economic dimension of the current geopolitical landscape, noting that Russia is benefiting from fluctuations in energy prices. He observed a growing number of countries considering purchasing Russian energy resources and potentially lifting sanctions, a development that loģika saka, jo augstāk kāps energoresursu cenas, jo lielāks būs spiediens
(logic dictates, the higher energy resource prices rise, the greater the pressure will be) to maintain those sanctions.
The expert emphasized the importance of resisting this pressure and maintaining sanctions against Russia, despite the economic incentives to do otherwise. He also pointed out that Iran appears to have received less support from Russia than anticipated, potentially leading other nations to doubt whether We see worth engaging with Russia
as a partner.
The assessment of Putin’s satisfaction with Western divisions comes at a critical juncture. The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to reshape the European security architecture, and the U.S. Relationship with its allies is under strain. Sārts’ comments suggest that these factors are being closely monitored by the Kremlin, which may be seeking to exploit any perceived weaknesses in the transatlantic alliance.
The situation is further complicated by the unpredictable nature of President Trump’s foreign policy. Sārts expressed skepticism about the potential for Trump’s pursuit of peace talks to significantly alter the course of the conflict in Ukraine. The director of NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence believes that the current trajectory of global instability is likely to continue, with potentially far-reaching consequences for international security.
The analysis underscores the interconnectedness of global events and the importance of a unified Western response to challenges posed by Russia and other actors seeking to undermine the international order. The increasing instability, coupled with the economic incentives for engaging with Russia, presents a complex and evolving situation that requires careful monitoring and strategic planning.
