Loyal Companions’ Epic Journey: Dogs Walk 17km Home in China, Captivating the Nation

A remarkable story of canine loyalty has unfolded in Changchun, China, where a group of seven dogs embarked on a 17-kilometer journey to return to their village after going missing. The heartwarming tale, captured in a viral video, has resonated across the country, prompting a wave of concern and joyful reunion. The incident highlights not only the strong bond between humans and animals but also sparked online speculation about the reasons behind the dogs’ disappearance.

The Long Walk Home

The story began on 15 March when a video surfaced online showing the seven dogs walking along a highway in Jilin province. The group included a golden retriever, a labrador, a German shepherd and a Pekinese, led by a determined corgi affectionately nicknamed “Dapang” – meaning “substantial fatty” – by locals. The video quickly gained traction, amassing over 230 million views as viewers marveled at the dogs’ collective determination. Concerns grew as temperatures in Changchun began to drop below freezing, raising fears for the animals’ well-being.

Search and Rescue Efforts

The video prompted immediate action from local animal welfare advocates. Tong Tong, a volunteer with a local stray dog rescue centre, initiated a search effort, going door-to-door in nearby villages and distributing missing dog flyers. “On the morning of 18 March, I woke up to find it was snowing in Changchun. I was especially worried about the seven dogs, afraid that they hadn’t eaten or drunk anything,” Tong Tong explained in a video posted by the rescue centre. She even utilized a drone to aid in the search, demonstrating the community’s dedication to finding the lost animals.

Reunited at Last

On 19 March, the heartwarming news broke: the dogs had successfully found their way home. Three of the dogs belonged to a woman residing in a village near Changchun. After four days of searching, she was overjoyed when Dapang returned to her home on 18 March. Following Dapang’s lead, the owner located the remaining dogs, who had been temporarily taken in by a kind villager.

Speculation and Official Explanation

The dogs’ disappearance initially fueled speculation online, with some users expressing concerns that they may have been stolen for the dog meat trade, which, while declining, remains practiced in certain regions of China. Others suggested they might have been taken to be resold as pets. However, Jilin’s provincial culture and tourism bureau offered a different explanation on 21 March. Officials stated that the dogs had wandered off, drawn by a German shepherd in heat, known to occasionally roam for several days. They also cautioned against the spread of misinformation online, emphasizing the importance of verifying facts before sharing them.

A Symbol of Loyalty and Community

The story of the seven dogs has captured the hearts of people across China, becoming a symbol of loyalty, resilience, and the power of community. The incident has even inspired creative interpretations, with some netizens suggesting it could be adapted into a film or a real-life version of the popular children’s cartoon, Paw Patrol. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of support and admiration for the dogs’ incredible journey. “Watching this made me want to cry. Dogs are humans’ friends forever,” one Weibo user wrote, reflecting the widespread sentiment.

Changchun: A City with a History

Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province, is a city with a complex history. As noted in Britannica, the area surrounding the city was originally a grazing ground for a Mongol banner (army division). Colonization by peasants from Shandong and Hebei provinces began in 1796, and a subprefecture was established in 1800. More recently, Changchun served as the capital of Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state, from 1931 to 1945, leaving a legacy of Japanese-style architecture in the city. Today, Changchun is a major industrial hub, particularly known for its automotive industry, and is home to over 9 million people.

The Ongoing Debate Around Dog Meat

While the official explanation attributes the dogs’ disappearance to natural instincts, the incident has reignited the debate surrounding the dog meat trade in China. Although the practice is becoming less common, it still exists in some areas, raising ethical concerns and prompting calls for stricter regulations. The story of these seven dogs serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the need to protect these loyal companions.
