Maldives Travel Surge: Private Jets & Airline Expansion Amidst Middle East Disruption

Maldives Travel Surge: Private Jets & Airline Expansion Amidst Middle East Disruption

March 17, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

The Maldives is solidifying its position as a key international travel hub, particularly for high-end tourism, as private jet arrivals surge and airlines adjust routes in response to disruptions in the Middle East. Recent data indicates a significant shift in travel patterns, with the island nation becoming an increasingly attractive destination for those seeking direct and reliable access. This trend underscores the Maldives’ growing importance in the global tourism landscape.

Private Jet Traffic More Than Doubles

Between February 28th and March 14th, 2026, Velana International Airport (MLE) recorded 128 private jet arrivals, a substantial 166 percent increase compared to the 70 aircraft that arrived during the same period last year, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). This dramatic rise reflects a clear preference for private aviation among travelers navigating a period of increased commercial flight cancellations and delays. Last year, the Maldives averaged five private jet arrivals daily, peaking at nine on a single day. In 2026, that average has climbed to over twelve daily arrivals, with a record eighteen jets landing on March 3rd alone.

Maafaru Airport: A Growing Hub for Private Aviation

While Velana International Airport remains the primary gateway for international travelers, Maafaru International Airport has rapidly emerged as a specialized hub for private aviation. During the recent peak tourism season, over 25 private jets were simultaneously parked on the Maafaru apron – the highest level of traffic the facility has ever handled. Airport expansion efforts have been crucial in accommodating this growth, increasing parking capacity to approximately 800 aircraft movements annually. Previously, the airport often had to turn away between 50 and 80 aircraft due to limited space. In 2025, Maafaru handled 804 private jet movements, a 38 percent increase from the 579 movements recorded the previous year. December 2025 alone saw 102 movements, averaging more than three aircraft per day, and bookings for December and January combined exceeded 200 movements.

Commercial Airlines Respond with Expanded Services

Commercial airlines are also adapting to the changing travel landscape by increasing flights to the Maldives. Edelweiss Air will expand its Zurich to Malé service between April 3rd and May 8th, 2026, increasing frequency from three to four weekly flights, and further to five flights per week between April 12th and April 27th. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) reports that Air India has also announced temporary expansion of international operations to address disruptions, adding 78 flights between March 10th and 18th on routes linking Delhi and Mumbai with destinations including Malé, Colombo, and major European and American hubs. The airline is deploying Airbus A320neo aircraft on these expanded India–Maldives services, adding approximately 17,660 seats. Aeroflot is similarly adding flights between Moscow and tourist destinations like Malé, Bangkok, Phuket, and Colombo, citing increased demand and the need to provide alternatives for passengers affected by instability in the Middle East.

Historical Context: Velana International Airport’s Development

Velana International Airport (VIA), initially established as a small strip of land on Hulhulé Island in 1960, has undergone significant development to turn into the Maldives’ primary international airport. According to Wikipedia, the airport officially opened on April 12, 1966, and now serves as a crucial gateway for tourists and a hub for airlines like BeOnd, Maldivian, and Trans Maldivian Airways. The airport’s coordinates are 04°11′30″N 073°31′44″E, and it operates under the IATA code MLE and ICAO code VRMM. The airport is managed by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), a state-owned company.

Destination Resilience and the Tourism Outlook

The Maldives’ diversified air access and specialized infrastructure for private aviation are enabling the destination to maintain accessibility even amidst global travel shifts. With expanded commercial flights and a surge in private aviation traffic, the country continues to demonstrate resilience as a premium tourism destination, ensuring connectivity for both luxury and mainstream travelers despite ongoing aviation disruptions in key transit regions. The recent increase in private jet arrivals, coupled with airline expansions, positions the Maldives favorably for continued growth in the tourism sector.
