Mexico: 4-Day School Break in March 2026 for Students & Workers
Students across Mexico are set to enjoy a four-day weekend in March 2026, thanks to a “megapuente” (long weekend) built around the commemoration of Benito Juárez’s birthdate and a scheduled administrative day for teachers. The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has officially marked this break in the 2025-2026 school calendar, providing a welcome respite for students in preschool, primary, and secondary schools.
The extended break stems from the celebration of the Natalicio de Benito Juárez, a significant historical date in Mexico observed on March 21st. However, by law, the official day of remembrance is moved to the third Monday of March, creating a long weekend. In 2026, this falls on March 16th. Adding to this, the SEP has designated Friday, March 13th as a day for administrative tasks for teachers, effectively extending the break for students.
What Days Will Students Be Out of School?
According to the official school calendar, the megapuente will unfold as follows:
- Friday, March 13th: Suspension of classes for administrative discharge.
- Saturday, March 14th: Weekend.
- Sunday, March 15th: Weekend.
- Monday, March 16th: Official day off for the Natalicio de Benito Juárez.
In other words students will have four consecutive days off, returning to classes on Tuesday, March 17th, 2026.
Why is the Date of Benito Juárez’s Birthday Adjusted?
Whereas Benito Juárez’s birthday is on March 21st, the Federal Labor Law stipulates that the official day of remembrance is moved to the third Monday of March. This adjustment is intended to create a longer weekend for workers and students alike.
Will Workers Also Have a Long Weekend?
Yes. Monday, March 16th is an official day of rest throughout Mexico, meaning many workers will also benefit from the extended weekend.
Additional Days Off in March
Beyond the mid-March megapuente, the school calendar includes one additional day off in March:
- Friday, March 27th: School Technical Council Day (Consejo Técnico Escolar).
Immediately following this, students will begin their Semana Santa (Holy Week) vacation, which will run from March 30th to April 10th in the 2025-2026 school year.
Total School Days in the 2025-2026 Cycle
The current school calendar outlines 185 days of classes for basic education, applicable to both public and private schools incorporated into the National Education System. The school year began in September 2025 and will conclude on July 15th, 2026, marking the start of summer vacation.
