Middle East Airspace Closures: Flight Disruptions & Travel Chaos – Updates

Middle East Airspace Closures: Flight Disruptions & Travel Chaos – Updates

March 2, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Global Aviation in Crisis: Middle East Airspace Closures Strand Passengers

Escalating tensions in the Middle East have triggered widespread disruption to global air travel, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded and airlines scrambling to reroute flights. Airspace closures across the region, prompted by recent military activity, are impacting major hub airports like Dubai and Doha, creating what one aviation consultant described as a “mess.” The crisis is already affecting an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 passengers traveling through Dublin Airport alone, with all flights to the Middle East cancelled today, March 2, 2026.

The Scale of the Disruption

The current situation represents a significant challenge to global aviation, rivaling the disruption seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to analytics company Cirium, 1,579 out of 3,990 flights scheduled to operate to the Middle East yesterday were cancelled. This included 747 flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and 285 flights to Qatar. Approximately half a million passengers typically pass through the airports in Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi each day, and many are now facing significant delays or cancellations.

Dublin Airport Impacted: Cancellations and Uncertainty

Dublin Airport is directly affected by the airspace closures. Daa Head of Media Relations Graeme McQueen stated that between 5,000 and 6,000 passengers have been impacted by cancelled flights. The airport typically handles 12 to 14 flights to Middle Eastern destinations daily, and twenty-three flights to Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi were cancelled over the weekend. Airport authorities have admitted they do not know when normal services will resume, and further disruption over the coming days is possible. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest updates. Dublin Airport has issued a warning to passengers regarding the ongoing situation.

What’s Driving the Chaos?

The disruption stems from escalating conflict in the Middle East. Missiles fired by Iran have targeted Israel, as well as Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE, and American military bases in the region. This has led to the closure of airspace across the region, effectively halting nearly all commercial flights. The US and Israeli bombardment of Iran is continuing to escalate, according to reports. RTE News provides ongoing coverage of the situation.

Gulf Carriers: A Critical Hub Disrupted

The impact is particularly acute because of the central role Gulf carriers – Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways – play in global air travel. UK-based aviation consultant John Strickland emphasized the fundamental importance of these airlines, particularly for east-west travel between Europe and Asia. He stated, “I can’t recall a situation, other than the pandemic, where we’ve had these Gulf hubs out of action in this way before.” Strickland as well noted that hundreds of thousands of passengers are currently stranded in Dubai and other Middle Eastern hubs who were not intended to be there.

Limited Alternatives for Passengers

Finding alternative routes is proving difficult. Strickland pointed out that although flights to Asia via airlines that fly directly to countries like Thailand and Singapore are available, these flights typically operate with limited spare capacity. “There’s not much space” on these routes, he warned, as they are usually fully booked.

Impact Beyond Passengers: Travel Stocks Tumble

The aviation disruption is also impacting financial markets. Travel stocks have tumbled as the conflict intensifies, with shares in major travel companies like TUI, Lufthansa, and British Airways-owner IAG experiencing significant declines. Oil prices have also jumped, raising concerns about potential increases in fuel costs for airlines. Hotelier Accor and cruise company Carnival have also seen their share prices fall.

Airline Responses to the Crisis

Several airlines have already taken steps to address the disruption. Here’s a summary of actions taken by airlines popular with Irish passengers:

  • Air France KLM: Cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv, Beirut, Dubai and Riyadh until March 3. KLM has warned of potential disruptions to flights to and from Dubai, Riyadh and Dammam until March 6, and flights to Tel Aviv are suspended.
  • British Airways: Allowing passengers traveling between London and Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai or Tel Aviv to change their flight dates free of charge. Full refunds are available for those traveling up to March 8.
  • Etihad Airways: All commercial flights to and from its Abu Dhabi hub remain cancelled.
  • Lufthansa: Suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv, Beirut, Amman, Dammam, Erbil and Tehran until March 8, and flights to Dubai until March 4.
  • Singapore Airlines: Cancelled flights to and from Dubai until March 7. Scoot cancelled flights to and from Jeddah until March 7.
  • Qatar Airways: Temporarily suspended flights to and from Doha due to airspace closures.
  • Turkish Airlines: Cancelled some flights to and from Bahrain, Dammam, Riyadh, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Syria and United Arab Emirates.
