Moroccan Handicrafts Exports to Hit Record $1.2 Billion in 2025 | Boosted by Tourism
Moroccan Artisan Exports Reach Record High of Over 1.2 Billion Dirhams in 2025
Moroccan artisan exports surged to a record 1.232 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2025, marking a significant milestone for the sector, officials announced Thursday. This achievement underscores the growing international demand for Moroccan craftsmanship and the increasing contribution of the artisan sector to the national economy. The news comes as Morocco prepares to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), an event expected to further showcase the country’s cultural heritage and artisanal skills.
A Boost from Tourism and Strategic Initiatives
The record export figures represent a substantial increase in revenue for Moroccan artisans. This success is attributed, in part, to a resurgence in tourism and a series of government initiatives designed to promote and support the artisan sector. As reported by Medias24, the performance is one of the best the sector has seen in a decade, fueled by increased tourism. The Secretariat of State for Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, in coordination with the House of Artisans, has been actively working to create opportunities for artisans to connect with both domestic and international markets.
CAN 2025: A Showcase for Moroccan Craftsmanship
The upcoming CAN 2025 tournament is being leveraged as a platform to highlight Morocco’s rich artistic traditions. Dedicated spaces for artisans have been established within the Fan Zones located in the six host cities: Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir, and Fès. This initiative, operating under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is part of the 9th edition of the National Artisan Week, running from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Artisans are using these spaces to display and sell their products, ranging from Amazigh carpets and pottery to traditional woodwork and cosmetic/food items. Mohamed El Bakari, a bookbinder and restorer, expressed his pride in representing a disappearing trade, noting the opportunity to share his expertise with tourists and visitors in Rabat, as detailed in a report by the MAP news agency.
Export Trends and Key Markets
While overall artisan exports have risen, specific product categories are driving this growth. According to data from the Department of Handicrafts, pottery and stone products, along with traditional clothing and carpets, are among the most exported items. The United States and France remain the primary import markets, accounting for 55% of total exports. Yet, a notable trend is the significant increase in exports to Turkey, which saw a surge from approximately 470,000 dirhams to nearly 43 million dirhams.
Further analysis reveals a 22% increase in imports from the United States, a 20% decrease in purchases from France, an 11% decrease from Spain, and a 17% increase in exports to Saudi Arabia. These shifting market dynamics suggest a diversification of export destinations and a growing interest in Moroccan crafts across different regions.
Growth in the First Four Months of 2025
The positive trend in artisan exports is not limited to the full year. Data from the first four months of 2025 indicates a 14% increase in turnover compared to the same period in 2024. The Ministry of Handicrafts projects a 9% growth in overall exports by the conclude of the year. This sustained growth is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Moroccan artisan sector.
The Artisan Sector: A Vital Component of the Moroccan Economy
The artisan sector plays a crucial role in Morocco’s economy, providing employment and contributing to the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage. The government recognizes the importance of this sector and has implemented various programs to support its development. These initiatives include providing training, access to finance, and marketing assistance to artisans.
La Vie éco reports on a novel economic ecosystem being shaped within the artisan sector, highlighting the ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the industry. The demand for “Made in Morocco” products, including carpets, pottery, and leather goods, is growing internationally, further solidifying the sector’s position in the global market.
What Lies Ahead for Moroccan Artisans?
Looking forward, the Moroccan artisan sector is poised for continued growth. The success of the CAN 2025 event and the ongoing government support are expected to further boost exports and create new opportunities for artisans. The focus on diversifying export markets and promoting high-quality, handcrafted products will be key to sustaining this momentum.
The sector’s ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences and embrace innovative marketing strategies will also be crucial for long-term success. As the demand for authentic and sustainable products continues to rise, Moroccan artisans are well-positioned to capitalize on this trend and solidify their reputation as producers of world-class craftsmanship.
