Morocco Leads African Manufacturing & Export Growth | The African Exponent

Morocco Leads African Manufacturing & Export Growth | The African Exponent

March 11, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Driven by the diversification of its industry and the rise of its manufactured exports, Morocco is establishing itself as a major industrial hub on the continent. According to a recent ranking, the kingdom ranks first among African countries producing consumer goods for export, reflecting the progressive evolution of African economies towards higher value-added production.

Morocco’s position in African trade continues to consolidate. A recent ranking published by the specialized platform The African Exponent positions the country as the leading producer of consumer goods for export in Africa, confirming the progressive transformation of its economy into an industrial and export platform.

According to the report, Morocco has established itself over the last decade as one of the engines of manufacturing production on the continent. The country relies on a progressive diversification of its industrial base and the development of several strategic sectors aimed at international markets.

This dynamic is part of a broader transformation of the landscape of African exports. Long dominated by raw materials, the continent’s foreign trade is now evolving towards a more diversified model, in which manufactured consumer goods occupy an increasing place. Between 2025 and 2026, African exports increasingly include higher value-added products, such as vehicles, electronics, textiles, processed foods, and household appliances.

Several countries have strengthened their industrial bases by relying on strategic trade agreements, improved logistical infrastructure, and public policies aimed at stimulating local production. This evolution reflects a growing desire to create sustainable jobs, increase foreign exchange earnings, and develop industries capable of withstanding fluctuations in global markets.

Morocco appears as one of the most advanced actors in this transformation. The report highlights that the kingdom “has rapidly transformed into a major industrial and export power, particularly in the field of consumer goods.”

A More Diversified Model
The country has developed solid industrial hubs in several key sectors over the years, including automotive, electronics, textiles, and agri-food. The automotive sector is now one of the main drivers of Moroccan exports. Supported by vast industrial zones such as Tanger Automotive City, it hosts numerous international manufacturers and suppliers and serves the European and African markets.

Beyond automotive, the textile and clothing industry remains one of the historical pillars of the Moroccan export economy. Thanks to prompt production times, geographical proximity to Europe, and recognized manufacturing quality, the sector continues to supply numerous European brands. Morocco has also positioned itself in processed food and packaged products. By leveraging its agricultural production and investments in the agri-food industry, the country exports a wide range of products to regional and international markets. Trade agreements concluded with the European Union and other international partners, combined with the kingdom’s strategic geographical position between Africa and Europe, further strengthen its role as an export platform.

In this continental ranking, South Africa ranks second, followed by Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. Ethiopia and Egypt complete the following positions. In the latter country, the manufacturing sector represents a significant share of African industrial production, covering electronics, household appliances, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods.

Government initiatives, such as the “Egypt Makes Electronics” program, have helped attract major international brands to develop local assembly lines producing millions of electronic units each year for export. The ranking also includes Tunisia, Ghana, and Kenya.

The latter is distinguished by the growth of its exports of processed foods, beverages, textiles, and light industrial products. Kenyan authorities have multiplied trade agreements to facilitate access to their products in international markets and improve their competitiveness.

the transformation of the African manufacturing sector is expected to continue in the coming years, driven by the expansion of international investment and the development of intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). In this new industrial landscape, countries with solid manufacturing ecosystems, such as Morocco, are expected to play an increasing role in the export of consumer goods on a large scale and in the integration of the continent into global supply chains.
