Nscale Raises $2bn to Fuel UK AI Infrastructure Expansion
Nscale Secures $2 Billion Funding Boost Amid UK AI Infrastructure Push
London-based AI infrastructure firm Nscale has secured $2 billion (£1.6 billion) in new funding, elevating its valuation to $14.6 billion. The investment arrives as the United Kingdom government prioritizes the development of domestic AI infrastructure capabilities, aiming to establish the nation as a key player in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. This funding round underscores the growing demand for large-scale computing power needed to train and deploy advanced AI models.
The Series C funding round was led by Aker ASA and 8090 Industries, with significant participation from industry giants including Nvidia, Dell Technologies, Lenovo, Citadel, and Point72. This influx of capital is intended to accelerate Nscale’s expansion of AI infrastructure, encompassing data centers, across Europe, North America, and Asia.
A Rapid Rise for a New Player
Founded less than two years ago, Nscale has quickly established itself as a prominent force in the UK’s emerging AI infrastructure sector. The company is actively collaborating with Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia on several large-scale AI projects, most notably the development of the UK’s largest planned AI supercomputer located in Essex. This facility, situated in Loughton, is projected to house tens of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and deliver up to 90 megawatts of AI compute capacity upon completion.
Nscale’s founder and CEO, Josh Payne, emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating, “What we have is the fourth industrial revolution. the world is changing at a rapid pace. Over the next five years artificial intelligence will be integrated into every industry, every product and every job… This is leading to the largest infrastructure buildout in human history.”
The UK’s Strategic Focus on AI
The timing of this funding round aligns with the UK government’s broader strategy to position the country as an “AI maker rather than an AI taker.” Ministers are actively seeking domestic companies capable of providing the substantial computing resources required for AI development and deployment. Nscale’s projects, including the Essex supercomputer and its involvement in the Stargate Norway project, are central to this strategy.
The Stargate Norway project, as reported by Nscale, aims to create a large-scale AI compute hub powered by renewable energy, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable AI infrastructure.
Board Appointments Signal Strategic Direction
Alongside the funding announcement, Nscale revealed the appointment of three new directors to its board: Sheryl Sandberg, former Meta COO; Nick Clegg, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta executive; and Susan Decker, former Yahoo President. These appointments bring a wealth of experience in global technology, corporate governance, and technology policy to Nscale’s leadership team. Clegg’s prior role at Meta, where he navigated complex regulatory issues surrounding AI and digital governance, is particularly noteworthy.
The Global Race for AI Infrastructure
The substantial investment flowing into AI infrastructure reflects the critical importance of computing capacity in the burgeoning AI economy. The demand for GPUs – the specialized processors that power AI algorithms – is surging, creating a bottleneck in the industry. As CNBC reported, the fresh capital will help accelerate Nscale’s development of vertically integrated AI infrastructure.
Rayyan Islam, co-founder of 8090 Industries, highlighted the key determinants of success in the AI era: “Compute, energy and industrial-scale deployment capacity will determine which nations and companies lead the next generation of technological and economic progress.”
For the UK, supporting companies like Nscale is viewed as a crucial step in ensuring that Europe maintains a degree of control over the infrastructure underpinning artificial intelligence, an area currently dominated by US-based hyperscalers.
What Happens Next for Nscale?
Nscale’s immediate focus will be on deploying the newly acquired capital to expand its data center capacity and accelerate the development of its AI infrastructure platform. This includes scaling its GPU clusters, enhancing its orchestration software, and expanding its AI services offerings. The company plans to continue collaborating with Microsoft, Nvidia, and other partners to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions to enterprises across Europe, North America, and Asia. Further details regarding specific expansion plans and project timelines have not been publicly disclosed.
