A combination of lifestyle modifications and, in some cases, medication is typically recommended. Regular weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, jogging, dancing, and weightlifting, helps stimulate bone formation. A healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is also crucial. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and fortified foods. Vitamin D can be obtained through sunlight exposure, fortified foods, and supplements.

Several medications are available to treat osteoporosis, including bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), and denosumab. These medications function by slowing bone breakdown or increasing bone formation. The choice of medication depends on individual factors, such as bone density, fracture risk, and overall health. It’s essential to discuss the potential benefits and risks of each medication with a qualified healthcare professional.

Prevention remains the most effective strategy for combating osteoporosis. This begins with adopting healthy habits early in life. Ensuring adequate calcium and vitamin D intake throughout childhood and adolescence is crucial for building strong bones. Engaging in regular weight-bearing exercise helps maximize bone density during peak bone mass accumulation years (typically up to age 30).

Quitting smoking is arguably one of the most impactful steps individuals can take to protect their bone health. As highlighted earlier, smoking interferes with bone cell function, reduces blood flow to bones, and inhibits calcium and vitamin D absorption. Reducing alcohol intake is also recommended, as excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with bone metabolism.
