Native to Australia, these mantises employ a “sit-and-wait” hunting strategy. Rather than actively pursuing prey, they remain motionless, blending into their surroundings. When an unsuspecting insect ventures within reach, the mantis unleashes a rapid, powerful strike using specialized raptorial legs. This isn’t a crushing blow, but a precise capture, utilizing sharp mouthparts to secure the meal. Researchers at Kiel University in Germany meticulously measured this strike force across different stages of the mantis lifecycle.

The study involved presenting the mantises with a fly larva encased in a transparent box attached to a force-measuring instrument. As expected, the mantises readily attacked the offering, providing researchers with quantifiable data on their strike power. The team observed that young mantises, having molted only twice, generated around 2.5 millinewtons of force. Adult males increased this to approximately 70 millinewtons, even as adult females delivered a substantial 196 millinewtons. This demonstrates a clear divergence in striking capability as the insects mature.

Scaling and the Mystery of Extra Power

Interestingly, the relationship between body size and strike force isn’t straightforward. While strike force generally correlates with muscle cross-sectional area, the researchers found that the mantises’ overall body weight increases at a faster rate than muscle area. So that smaller, younger mantises can, proportionally, deliver a surprisingly strong punch. However, the most puzzling finding is that adult female mantises strike with a force greater than predicted based solely on the size of their key muscle.

“I’m interested in scaling,” explains Thies Büscher, an entomologist at Kiel University. This observation suggests that other factors, potentially involving additional muscles or previously overlooked anatomical features, contribute to the female mantis’s exceptional striking power. The researchers hypothesize that some form of energy storage mechanism might be at play, similar to the latch-and-spring systems found in mantis shrimp or gall midge larvae, but haven’t yet identified any evidence to support this. They aren’t limited by their mouthparts and demonstrate a capacity to consume more than necessary for survival, exhibiting feeding behaviors more akin to spiders than typical insects. This suggests that the powerful strike isn’t just about securing a meal, but also about efficiently processing it.

The disparity in strike force between male and female mantises likely plays a role in their reproductive strategies. While the exact mechanisms are still under investigation, the increased power of females could be crucial for subduing larger prey, providing them with the resources needed to produce eggs. The discovery that females strike harder than predicted by muscle size opens up new avenues for research.
