Record-Breaking Exodus: Over 270,000 Vehicles Leave Jakarta During Peak 2026 Eid al-Fitr Travel

Jakarta – PT Jasa Marga (Persero) has reported a historic peak in traffic volume during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) exodus, with over 270,000 vehicles leaving Jakarta. This marks the highest number of vehicles recorded leaving the capital city during the annual homecoming period in Indonesian history.

The peak of the outbound traffic occurred on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026. Jasa Marga facilitated the passage of 270,315 vehicles, representing a 98.3% increase compared to normal traffic conditions and a 4.8% rise from the peak of the 2025 Eid al-Fitr travel season. This surge in travelers underscores the significant mobility associated with the Lebaran holiday in Indonesia.

This figure encompasses cumulative traffic flow from four primary toll gates: Cikupa (westbound), Ciawi (southbound), Cikampek, and Kalihurip Utama (eastbound). The concentration of vehicles at these key exit points highlights the major routes taken by those leaving the Jakarta metropolitan area to celebrate Eid with family and friends in their hometowns.

Trans-Java Toll Road Sees Record Volume

Beyond the four main toll gates, Jasa Marga too reported a record-high volume of traffic heading towards the Trans-Java Toll Road, reaching 175,754 vehicles. This represents a 6% increase compared to the peak of the 2025 Eid al-Fitr travel season, according to Jasa Marga’s Director of Operations, Rivan A. Purwantono. The Trans-Java Toll Road, a crucial artery connecting major cities in Java, experienced unprecedented demand during this period.

Despite the record-breaking numbers, officials stated that traffic flow was effectively managed through the implementation of traffic engineering measures. These included contraflow lanes – temporarily reversing traffic direction on certain segments – and the national one-way system implemented between kilometer 70 and kilometer 414. These strategies aimed to maximize road capacity and minimize congestion during the peak travel period.

Traffic Management and Congestion Points

Congestion was primarily reported on the MBZ Elevated Road and the lower section of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road. To address this, authorities expanded the contraflow system from one to three lanes and implemented the national one-way system. The volume of vehicles on these routes was described as the highest in their history of operation. Jasa Marga aimed to resolve congestion within a maximum of 12 hours, and reported that traffic had returned to normal speeds by 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 19th, 2026.

Jasa Marga emphasized its commitment to leveraging technology as a “decision support system” to inform traffic management decisions made in coordination with the police. Intensive inter-sectoral coordination involving all stakeholders was also highlighted as a key factor in maintaining traffic flow. This collaborative approach is crucial for effectively managing the complex logistics of the annual Eid al-Fitr exodus.

Regulations for Heavy Vehicles and Return Travel

Jasa Marga reminded drivers of three-axle or larger vehicles to adhere to restrictions outlined in a joint decree issued by the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, the National Police Traffic Corps, and the Directorate General of Highways of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing on February 5th, 2026. This decree regulates traffic flow and crossings during the Eid al-Fitr travel period, including operational limitations for goods vehicles. Jasa Marga has been integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its traffic management systems to optimize services.

Looking ahead to the return travel period, Jasa Marga advised travelers to plan their journeys carefully and avoid the anticipated peak return flow on March 24th, 2026. They also announced a toll discount applicable during the return flow period from March 26th, 2026, at 00:00 WIB to March 27th, 2026, at 00:00 WIB, aiming to distribute traffic more evenly and ease congestion.

Preparing for the Return Journey

“Similar to the outbound journey, Jasa Marga again urges the public to arrange their return travel schedule to support the smooth flow of traffic, making the travel experience during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return safer and more comfortable,” Rivan stated. The company’s proactive communication and incentives are designed to mitigate potential congestion and ensure a smoother return journey for millions of travelers.

The scale of this year’s exodus, with over 270,000 vehicles leaving Jakarta, underscores the enduring importance of the Eid al-Fitr holiday as a time for family reunions and cultural traditions in Indonesia. The successful management of this massive movement of people reflects the ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and traffic management systems in the country.
